I recently bought an estate Petersons Xl315, and after I smoked the first bowl, I noticed there was a small indentation inside the bowl. I can't get a good picture of it as it doesn't show up well when I take the picture. Is this the start of a burn out? It feels like a Small dent. There is no cake yet, so should I just continue to smoke it and it will fill in with carbon?

An estate pipe with no cake? Has it been reamed? I'm guessing this is an imperfection in the briar but probably no big deal. Once you get a carbon layer, or cake if that's your style, it won't be a problem. If you were one of these old timers (like my dad) who just smoked one pipe until it cracked, it might be the Achilles heel, but likely if you have a rotation of a dozen pipes or more, it's no problem, or not for many years.

Yes, it had been reamed very well down to the briar like it it was new. It's not a huge indentation just feels like a dent. I have gotten pipes with imperfections in the chamber before (usually where the wood pops out slightly more than the rest, like a small bump) but never inword. Good to know it's probably safe. I have a good rotation of pipes, enough it takes a while to build cake on my pipes. I may just not use this one often to cut back on risk since it's my most expensive one.

Gee, if you don't use it, you have less ownership of it. I'd smoke it in regular rotation unless or until it appears this is a process and not just a minor flaw. Obviously it's your call, but I hate to have you somewhat lose use of the pipe. A more expensive pipe shouldn't provide less use.

i guess I'll keep it in my rotation for now, and just keep an eye on it after each smoke. Thanks for the advice !
