In general, is it best to open a bulging tin just to check one way or the other? Not necessarily asking for a friend.

I recently opened a bulging tin of GL Pease Navigator and it sounded like a freaking bomb was set off. I jumped out of my chair it was so loud.
i have never had a can open like that. It was kind of cool.

Had a number of GLP bulging tins but never one like that. I doubt it is mold causing it, look forward to hearing what you discover.

As @elessar mentioned, this is very dangerous and all future bulging tins should be sent to us promptly. We have been thoroughly trained in safe disposal practices.

Fermentation under pressure. You can't beat it.
I've thought about doing some tobacco fermentation studies in a pressure vessel. There are yeast and bacteria strains that thrive under 30 psi.

Get a foot of det cord, wrap it around it, put it behind a solid wall in a clean room (you can line the room with plastic sheets like Russian/Italian/Irish/Jewish/Japanese mobs do). Don't forget the cap. Let her whip.

I'm no chemist but it sounds like there is something in the tobacco that is decomposing and producing a gas. Just put it in a new container and don't tighten the lid too much. Let it breathe, and smoke it up.

It's a cold, rainy, Monday morning and as you can see I've got too much time on my hands....

I can't wait till I get a bulge so bad I open it up in front of my attorney in May which will be my daughter. If I am lucky the top will slice a huge gash in my forward or face and we can own Dunhill.
