Staining a pipe???

I have an older pipe that is really a nice one, but to revitalize it, I wanted to sand it, deep clean it, and re-stain it. Do you use standard wood stain, or something else? My brother does a lot of wood work & has a ton of really nice wood staining liquids. Can you recommend something else, or guide me in the right direction? Thanks, LeRoy

What embers said. It works every time, it's cheap and it's easy to apply.

Whenever I receive an old, dirty estate, I clean off the outer grime with liquid soap and an old electric toothbrush.
The I wet-sand with micromesh pads. This removes not just the dirt, but lightens the colour of the bowl, often exposing some nice underlying grain.
I leave to dry, then apply Ibepen Briar Restoration Balm or Halcyon wax and buff.
I much prefer the lighter result than the previous dark stained look.

If he has any Transtint or Transfast woodworking dye concentrate in suitable color, it will work just fine - they mix with alcohol.

Technically dyes are not stains, stains would be a bad idea…

The pen guys outer bowl stuff is really nice. The stem stuff not so much.

Most makers use aniline dyes like Fiebings leather dye. They are the easiest to use because they are already mixed and ready to use. I use J.E. Mosers powder dyes just because it's easier (to me) to customize colors.
