I'm wondering if anyone has run across seeing the colored stain of a pipe on the end of the pipe cleaner after running it through the pipe. I just had my first smoke in an Ashton Canadian from 2009. It's an estate pipe, but it was unsmoked. When I ran a pipe cleaner through it, the color of the pipe (dark red) was on the pipe cleaner. I've not had this happen before, so I really don't know what, if anything, to make of it. Thoughts?

Many times stain will creep into the shank of a new pipe. I ALWAYS clean the shank out with q-tips and alcohol as I am convinced, many times that is the source of an off tasting new pipe.

Thanks for this. Actually, the pipe tastes great. No problem there. Just colored pipe cleaners.

Oh no this is impossible... Only could happen in a Peterson. You must have stuck the cleaner down a Peterson shank by accident.
Oh but wait... the stain didn’t make the smoke foul? I thought that was what caused it.

Hmm. A bit of bad QC from a great pipe company caused stain to come off on a pipe cleaner. That means that all pipes who have stain come off in the same way are just fine.

Makes sense. Of course logically varnishes and stains have no effect on taste or smoking characteristics at all...right? It's only a chemical compound that may give off flavors when heated or humidified so that has no bearing on the smoking characteristics. You're all just Peterson bashers anyway. Right?

I mean really, is it that hard to block both holes so that the stummel can get a bit of stain without it permeating the entire pipe? Must be the case.

I think it would depend on the stain and its effects. Maybe some stains don't have a taste when heated? I'm not one that has ever complained about a Pete having a bad taste due to dip staining.
This guy seems to say his doesn't have a bad taste, so I can't argue with that. It's his experience... same with Pete owners, if someone says they hate the taste, how can we argue with that?
Lets see a picture of the pipe! How does she smoke?

Yup, this guy does say it doesn't have a bad taste. Of course, I drink varnish with my tea on a regular basis... Here's a picture of the pipe. Smoked very nicely on the first bowl,, which was about 1/4 full since I am breaking it in.

To paraphrase Foggymountain. Not all of us have the same tastes. Some can taste the stain regardless of how many others don't. The other issue is, the care taken in making an item. I understand some stain bleed into the bowl but a whole lot of extra in the airway does not show the care I would like to see in the products I buy.

By the way, I love Peterson pipes regardless of how much some dislike them. The pipe I regret losing most is the 999 rusticated silver spigot I gave to my friend.

EDIT: I still don't agree with dip-staining as I am one who can taste a difference. You can dismiss it all you want but it does cause a problem for some of us.

Personally I like the red stain. It tastes kind of like cherry. No, honestly I have never had a stain transferal problem with any pipe I have had. I do know that when staining a pipe that stuff seems to take on a life of it's own and tends to leap aggressively onto anything even remotely near it.

I don't own one, but I am an Ashton fan, often look at them online. Like I need another pipe. However, despite this being a minor issue that will soon dissipate on this pipe, we ought to say, it shouldn't happen. Most pipes, and most upper end pipes, shouldn't have this problem. It's carelessness on the production line, so tut-tut to Ashton. If they want to keep their classy reputation, they should take note. Love them Ashtons ... however ....
