Old St Bruno was more of a Lakeland with a floral topping. Current MacBaren version shares few things in common and the topping is vinegar plus MacBaren's typical flavors. Although I preferred the older version, it's a good tobacco. I smoked a lot of it time ago.

I smoked a fair amount of the Ogden's product in the 1970's and '80's and didn't find it that floral. The topping on the MacBaren version is pretty similar to Ogden's, but I prefer the Virginias in the Ogden's version, which had a touch of floral, and overall more depth flavor.

Yes, it was not overtly floral, but I recall a big difference between both. At least in the version that was made in Spain, which is the one I tried. It was smokier and stronger as well, so maybe it had more dark fired

Bit the bullet and bought a pouch. I just lit up my first bowl and am absolutely loving this stuff. It’s earthy, savory and just the slightest bit sweet. I get no floral taste at all. Sablebrush’s description of leather and camphor is spot on. I also get a hint of vanilla from time to time. There will be lots more added to my cellar.

I get more vinegar from St Bruno than the Lakeland essence. It’s still there but I really have to dig deep to find it.

Same with Stonehenge Flake, in regards to the Lakeland.

G&H Scotch Flake is my lightest Lakeland essence that is consistently able to taste and even then it probably is between a 3-4/10.

St. Bruno and SHF is like a 1/10 on my palette.

I bought a test tin of St Bruno and tasted no Lakeland as I don't care for that. I predict that the St Bruno is going to age amazingly well. I bought 100 tins because I predict this is going to taste great with 8 plus years.
I bought all of mine from the original release and just put it all away to age. It came out in June of 2016 so another couple of years before I crack one.

To me the flake is less flavored than the ready rubbed. I love both though I prefer the RR because it has more flavor.
One other poster on this thread agreed and I believe (but correct me if I'm mistaken) Jiminks said something similar in his reviews. Is this the consensus then? And if so, do most prefer the flake or the ready rubbed? In which form did the original St. Bruno come, flake or ready rubbed/pouch? Thanks, and sorry for hijacking the thread.

Glad you got some and like it. It's my travel tobacco since I can grab the pouch and a cob and throw in the luggage to go. I like lakelands, but get zero of that essence in St. Bruno. Same with Hansom Flake. Enjoy!

When I was a 'young un' at boarding school we used to roll cigarettes out of St Bruno RR. I prefer Condor and the St Bruno I have smoked in last few years seems to taste different but that may be me getting older. I must pick up a tin and give it a whirl again.
