The Buc-ee's they are building off I-10 before Gulfport will be closer than either Lafayette or Ruston.ssjones:
You needn't have gone to the expense of actually purchasing a home in Louisiana, as Buc-ee's is building two locations there: one in Ruston, and the other in Lafayette. From what I understand, their stores are so large that you could probably live in them and no one would be the wiser!

Nice. Looks big enough to host a pipe club get-together when you are settled in.The enclosed porch on the back of the house is air-conditioned, that's where you'll find me (Bonus, we didn't know this room had AC)

Larvacide or get a few fishIf anyone knows about giant-ass fountains like the one out front, give me a shout. It's been dormant for one year and I'm sure full of mosquitoes.
Is the water somewhat clear? Kinda bet it's not. Check the pump motor. Find the switch. If anyone knows about giant-ass fountains like the one out front, give me a shout. It's been dormant for one year and I'm sure full of mosquitoes.
It hasn't been run for a year. It has a water supply and electric (as does the big fountain in the back yard. I suspect it has a drain as well, this guy ran everything under the ground (water lines, electric, sprinkler system, etc.).Is the water somewhat clear? Kinda bet it's not. Check the pump motor. Find the switch.
Then I'd siphon off all the water then clean the crud out, let it dry, then refill. If the fountain is running, the probability of mosquitos goes way down.
The problem is that your yard is just one section of a few square miles of that ant colony. The actual mounds are merely their egg incubators. There's not a poison on the market that can merely be applied on your yard that will kill the colony. They are still there, underground. You'll most likely see more mounds pop up, and you have to decide whether having poison in your yard is worth just poking the bear with a stick.. I put down 20 lbs of Sevin Insect killer, which is supposed to remove fire ants. Hoping that works. Welcome to Louisiana.

Red ants are from Africa, and came over as we imported azaleas. The do not make colonies the same way domestic ants do. They create miles of underground passages, and they do not stockpile food the same way either, making poisons ineffective on them. But, people keep trying to poison them out, but just putting it on the mounds of eggs when they pop up doesn't really do much. And, the dusts and poisons can affect your family, friends, and pets, mostly pets. There are poisons in granules that ants accumulate inside the anthill and quickly exterminate the entire colony.
With European ants they work great (tried several times); I don't know if the American ones are more resistant.
