I went for a 4 wheeler (quad bike) ride just before dusk tonight. I passed a Mennonite family of about 6 where the kids were riding bicycles and the parents were walking. As I sped past, I saw the father had a pipe in his mouth. I did a double take but oncoming traffic kept me focusing on what was in front of me. My first pipe in the wild though!

I live in a bit of a posh area in France and see a pipe smoker walking about or driving with a pipe every few weeks, sometimes the same guys. It's uncommon here, but not completely unheard of. In fact, when I tell people I smoke a pipe they're not THAT shocked.

You do look very young. If I saw you walking around smoking a pipe, I wouldn't think it was very common. France must have a different set of normals, ha ha. puffy

I have always found pipe smokers in the wild to be talkative and friendly. Perhaps it is because I literally live in a resort area where people come to relax and be friendly. The locals, like myself, have fully embraced the “shallow living, no worries - no stress“ attitude of looking at life. They too are happy to talk. Yesterday at a bar, my wife struck up a conversation with a few gentlemen sitting next to us. They could have chatted for hours, talking about nothing of worth, and enjoying every second of it. I noted that both gentlemen said the same thing - why ever leave - life is so easy here and no body ever thinks too deeply about anything. I was surprised to hear them say that, mostly because it’s true. It all about where’s the next great place to get a drink or isn’t the weather nice- just like yesterday.

Just watched Devil in a blue dress. Enjoyed the scenes of a shop with codger blends stacked on the wall behind the counter. Tubs of Prince Albert, Granger, Velvet, Kentucky Club, Half-n-half. Cans of Prince Albert and Velvet. Nostalgia I suppose. This is the sort of pipe stuff I'd like to see in the wild. A simple old shop stocked with these goodies from yesterday. I'd definitely pop in regularly for a can of the Prince. As for people smoking a pipe? Nah. They're a bunch of wierdos...

I smoke my pipe in public constantly and on many occasions people have approached me. If I don't feel like talking about it I shut the conversation down but normally I enjoy it. A fellow pipe smoker often says "what are you smoking today". In fact just the other day I was on a golf cart ride in my camping community and a guy flagged me down. He told me that he has just started pipe smoking and asked me if I had any tips. We had a long conversation that led to a fireside smoking session. Good stuff.

One of the starters at my muni is a piper, I gave him a tin of Gaslight once and he let me replay the course for free that day. It was a great day.
