After resting in rice over night the pipe was significantly dryer. And after dumping the rice out of the bowl, easier to light.

I always wondered if something like this would work for speed drying a pipe. The LEDs produce very low heat and can be set to run for up to 30 minutes. Seems unlikely it would cause damage. Would be interesting if someone tried it and let us know.

A regular electric fan blowing directly into the pipe running overnight would probably also work well.

Better even than rice might be silica beads...They absorb more moisture than rice will. You can either buy them or cut apart the little packets that come with dry foods like beef jerky.

The pipe isn't all that wet after smoking but noticeable when smoking the next day. I guess I prefer the dry briar taste. After a week of doing the dry in rice between smokes it still works better than air drying. I'll stay away from silica beads for anything I put in my mouth and stay with the edible option. I suppose if my home was dryer I wouldn't have this problem. Even bath towels take longer than twenty-four hours to dry on the towel bar.

That, my friend, is why I own several clay pipes. I can smoke the living hell out of those without having to worry at all. I tried a corncob, but I accidentally bit through the stem on my first and only one. I have approximately eight briars in my rotation, but don't smoke them as often. I mainly use the briar pipes for aromatic tobacco, for some unexplainable reason those do not taste so good in the clay. Klay is also no good when smoking a fine cut such as crumble or shag. Trying to smoke Petersons perfect plug after running it through a coffee grinder in a clay would be a disaster. I ordered a cutter pipe from Dawn missed Studios, A small firm that specialises in clay pipes. They are located in the UK and is not as expensive as others. I just hope the thing gets to me in one piece.

That, billkay, is exactly the way I do it for a briar pipe, in fact I have a great little pipe resting after some old Dublin. I smoked 4 bowls already, all using the same pipe, and no flavor is lost due to not resting the pipe.
I prefer my clays, but I made an exception for today. I will be switching back to the Clays tomorrow though.

Recently when it was very humid(as in raining) I noticed a huge amount of moisture in my SWISS Dry Smoker system pipe's bowl. I mean it was amazing! It would have taken at least 3 Q-tips to soak it up if I had not dumped it. A testament to how much moisture a system pipe can remove. The comment by billkay...

The problem is wet dottle in the heel. Dump that out wet and it will take days to dry out.

I often let the pipe rest when the bowl gets warm. Taste is less enjoyable and tongue burn is a possibility. Many times I light another pipe and continue smoking. I was thinking about how the "cooling pipe" is often forgotten about. The old part unburned tobacco and part dottle soaks up moisture. The relight of this pipe is many times as good or better than the initial light in flavor. This partial dottle may help in airing out the moisture in the pipe bowl similar to a wicking of the moisture into the air.

I tested this in my little briar that I use for when I need to be away from the house for an extended period of time, for example, for work, or when visiting. After letting the pipe cool down and only then dumping, it is actually a lot drier than when dumping immediately after smoking. However, the only issue I have found with this is that the sides of the bowl has a lot more residue than you usually get in a pipe you smoke, dump and clean. If, however you only have one pipe with you, unless you have no choice, cool and then dump.
