Greetings!

I'm new to pipe smoking, just started this week.

I have a stubby pipe with a metal bowl

This one ^

And I've been smoking it 3-4 times a day, and I've been getting this horrible sour smell and taste.

How do I fix that?
I'm a newcomer So any other tips are greatly appreciated!

Welcome mate. On the bottom of that metal bowl there should be a screw. Take it out because there is crap under the metal liner. I had one years and years ago. If there is no screw, just pop that liner out, but either way, that liner has to come out. Then clean the bowl really well with alochol or whiskey etc. The shank is probable in the same condition. Clean it really well with Q-tips and pipe cleaners dipped in same as above. Start there mate and good luck to you. Odds are that you will have to do an alochol and salt or cotton ball treatment anyway, but you have to have a starting point.

First of, welcome to the wonderful world of pipe smoking
+3 on the cob... or a cheap decent briar pipe if you don't like the looks of a cob. Spend $50 and you're set for your first 6 months or a year. Here's some links to some of our site sponsors to make it easy for ya.
These are decent. Not great, but ok for a starter pipe:

http://pipesandcigars.com/romapipes.html (a bit better than the Leonessa imho)

http://pipesandcigars.com/brighampipes.html (ditto)
Smokingpipes.com has a "pipe Locator" button on the right. You can search for pipes under $100. Heck, for $56 you can get a Peterson Kapet and they smoke great. I have one with me right now. Here's a good example:

Nice bent one: http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/peterson/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=90979

Or a straight one: http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/peterson/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=91004
Finally, CupOjoes has a whole list of under $50 pipes. Look for the Roma pipes or even better, the Savinelli Florence are on sale for $49.

Then chunk the liner thing.. it'll keep souring up on you and destroy your interest and pleasure in pipes.
Good luck my friend, always feel free to ask.

Thank you everyone! I will definitely get a corn cob pipe! And look into a briar pipe! Definitely curved ones are my favorite style!

Good advice above. Ditch the metal bowl'd pipe. A cob or a briar will smoke a lot better. Cobs are a good start.
Look to our sponsors' websites and buy the best looking pipe you can afford!
Welcome to the forums. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. Lots of great people here.
Feel free to ask any question you can't find the answer to!
Happy Smoking. :puffy:

Oh and look on eBay or on the forum here. Nothing wrong with a $20-$30 cleaned up estate pipe, even if they're nameless. Or they come even cheaper if you want to try cleaning them up yourself. I bought a lot of 7 pipes for $60 about a month ago. So they can be found.

Welcome to the forum. The guys on hear couldn't have said it better. I will say if you go to a B&M( a local tobacco shop) ask or look at the basket pipes. Usually 25-50 bucks and may not be great but check them out. Use a pipe cleaner on them to make sure you can run one through, take them apart check the mortise and tenons, see if it takes filters, you know get familiar with it before you buy it(something that should be done when checking out a pipe). And don't be afraid to ask the shop owners about them. That's why they are there. The best thing any new pipe smoker can do is ask questions, and talk to the guys on the forum.
Oh yeah. Also read as much as you can on here. You can learn a lot. :puffpipe:
