Sometimes Your Favorite Pipe (brand) isn't perfect.

Now check this image. See the problem? This pipe should never have been sold like that.

Bought new, or estate? Looks like a former owner over reamed it.

I bought it estate. The front of the rim--the fat section!--was badly burned. Before I began work on it, I noticed the irregularity. I had to take a few millimeters off the rim to clear the burn. I measured it with calipers and the width of the sides of the inner bowl reflect the proportions we see from outside.

That back still looks like user damage, either reaming or heat erosion from aggressive lighting or smoking. I doubt it left the factory that way.

What does it matter?

Is there adequate wall thickness in the back?

If so, it’s good.

Definitely looks like user error by the former owner. No part of the upper bowl is true.

from here it looks like the rim has an even edge. Like the edge is cut the same. Could just be that pic but if it was over reamed wouldn't that part be different?

Is the hole round, or elliptical? A little difficult to tell from the photo.
If the former, then drilled off center.
If the latter, over-reamed at the back edge.

If a parallel lathe was used in the manufacture, it is very difficult for this to happen, since the external turning and drilling are done on the same axis of rotation. It seems that it has been fixed before reaching your hands and on that occasion it was deformed

As I look the pipe over, I'm agreeing. I can visualize how it used to be. What a shame!
