I have to add that I do need the occasional shake up. Every couple of months I need to smoke something I have not had before or not had in a long time. Weirdly it kind of refreshes the palate and then the regulars are just great again. And yes that tin will be the majority of what I smoke for the next week and some change. Almost doesn't matter what it is. Just something exotic to me.
I agree completely, that change-up truly changes everything for me and re-sets the palate again.

My favorites in pipes and foods are funny because if I eat them or smoke them too much I get sick of them. But it only takes a little bit away to fall in love again. I sometimes feel the same way about the girlfriend too, I get sick of her and then find myself missing her dearly. I guess that might say more about me then anything else.

If a particular shape and tobacco blend really sing I will dedicate a pipe to that blend, there is something magical that happens to a pipe after 5 or so tins of the same blend. Granted I only do this for a few blends but it works for me.

My pipe collection grows but I only keep 10 ish tobaccos at a time, I don't know any British pipe smokers cellaring tobaccos, I certainly never have in over 50 years of smoking a pipe, just keep as I said about ten blends at a time, this lets me change my tobaccos when I want. Also I like my tobaccos as new form the blenders as I can, I always think they know when it's ready to smoke at it's best.

I'm the same way. Whether I am on a genre kick or on one particular blend, after about a week maybe, I need something in even a different genre than what I had been smoking.

If I keep smoking the same blend too long, I can't taste as much of it anymore, especially the more subtle aspects. Which I wouldn't think would be necessary just having one bowl a day, but apparently is so for me.

I guess similar to going nose-blind to what your house or car or something smells like when you're in it all the time.

I smoke. I’m a pipe smoker. It is who I am. A tin in my pocket, maybe a couple in my truck, oh… and always a pouch in my glove compartment. I have several blends on ky workbench when I’m in the studio. When I have to go out and chop up a fallen tree, I think about what I want ti smoke while doing it. Hanging out with friend, which blend goes with really bad stories and dad jokes? Which three blends will I take with me on the drive to our cabin in Hot Springs? Which blend for the beach? I smell like really good pipe tobacco. My home smells like really good pipe tobacco. Hundreds of blends. Boxes of leaf that I grew. My own blends. Many pipes. Many many pipes.

When I am out and about, I’m the guy with a pipe. Packing my pipe at the table in the restaurant, and walking about the mall with ky unlit pipe.
“Hey, look at the old guy with a pipe.”

“The smell reminds me of my grandpa. May I set here?”

“Hey, I’ve smoked a pipe once. Is this seat taken?”

Kids coming to me with problems. Friends with problems.

While I may always have a pipe going, but when I’m out throwing the ball for my dogs, those are the best smokes.

I was smoking Anniversary Cake in my Northern Briar the day the day I signed away the old farm.

I was smoking Virginia Flake by C&D in my Hilson stacked dub when my grand son was born.

I seem to just be a pipe guy.

I'm an old guy who smokes pipes but don't quite feel like the pipe guy, with all the lovely elements you describe. I don't feel like an old guy either.

There are blends I come back to regularly but when I read about a blend that a pipe guy really likes, I get a tin or two and give it a try. Worst case, I don't like it and am out a few bucks.

I have 10 pipes. I smoke 4 of them consistantly (three Petersons and a Winslow). 1Q has been my tobacco for about four years now. However, I am on the hunt for a nice English. Once I find it I will be set. Simple suites me "right down to the ground."

A bonus for me has been getting to know some of my pipes better. Recently I had been smoking just a handful of pipes over and over and over - not a problem because I dig those pipes, but … I’ve got a lot of really nice pipes that I have been neglecting. It’s been pleasant to reacquaint myself with them. Win / Win.

Been on kind of the same thing - I chased a ton of blends - have a ton of jars with some measure of tobacco in them. I am now smoking up the blends as I whittle down to simpler times. Same with my pipes, I don't have an extensive collection, but enough, and the rotation I am currently smoking is less than the total, so that means I'm covered.

I agree, though, as I work through one blend in one jar, I am able to better discern those flavors.
Cool topic, nice discussion.

Decades ago I only had about six pipes. The local newsstand had a dozen blends, most of which I liked just fine, although I usually smoked 2-3 more often than the others. My normal routine was to buy an ounce or two and smoke just that until gone.

Years passed and I somehow accumulated a massive cellar with a wide variety and purely ridiculous number of lovely pipes. I smoked anything that took my fancy in any pipe that seemed like what would be enjoyable at the moment.

Works for me.

Recently I’ve been smoking one or two pipes with a single blend for a week or two more or less exclusively.

Also works for me.

What I’ve found is that I’m enjoying this change up and learning more about the flavors and the individual personalities of both the pipes and the tobaccos.

It’s been interesting and it reminds me of simpler times. Don’t know how long it will continue but so far I’m enjoying the experience.

Don’t think I’ll ever become a one blend guy - or even one genre - but I’m pretty pleased with this and it’s rather forcing me to get to know my pipes in a good way. I feel good about that.

Just a random musing as I enjoy a couple Savinelli pipes and an open tin of OGS today. Next week it’ll be something different but I’ll decide what combination then.

Anyone else do this? Might be a worthwhile endeavor if you are so inclined. Or not. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Hope you all are keeping it smokey. 🙂

In today's fast-paced world, where information is constantly bombarding us from all angles, it's crucial to take a step back and consider the quality of the information we consume. With the rise of social media and instant communication, it's easy to fall into the trap of accepting everything at face value. However, it's essential to cultivate a critical mindset and evaluate the reliability and credibility of the sources we encounter. By actively questioning and analyzing the information presented to us, we can better navigate the sea of data and make more informed decisions. This approach not only enhances our understanding of the world but also empowers us to discern fact from fiction in an increasingly complex and interconnected society.

You'll find that for the most part, pipe smokers have an aversion to much of social media. Many here avoid Facebook, Instagram, X, etc.

critical mindset and evaluate the reliability and credibility of the sources we encounter.
Again, pipe smokers. Many take few things at face value and will critique the answers into oblivion.

I tend to get into one blend heavily for a year and have "satellites" for changes of pace, although that one has turned into three this year - partly owing to new pipes which suit particular blends. Then there are blends which are recommended and I stash a tin or two for "later", quite a few of those.

I have either way too much tobacco now or I'm wisely half expecting war and famine real soon now; there's a strong element of hoarding, a need which grips me from time to time. I'm about ready to coast for a while, simply enjoy what I have.

It all started by looking for "the One" though, which I used to have in Three Nuns and smoked like a codger. It has been a trip.

I'm still on the other side of the spectrum. I really enjoy the myriad of flavors found in the myriad of pipe tobaccos. Not only in the different genres/families (aromatics compared to Englishes as well as when the lines blur) but in the leaves themselves. I'm enthralled by the differences between say a Virginia compared to a burley. And then the nuances or even overt difference in tastes between blends in the same family. In cigars, there's that Cuban standard people are chasing. With pipe tobacco, it seems a more sandbox approach and that tickles me pink. In my scant 4 years smoking a pipe I have collared broad. I don't have too many pounds of any one blend (with a very small number of Virginia based exceptions), but I have many different examples of themes. And it's perfect for me.

Pipes are different in my mind. I have and will try to stay at 30*. That's more than enough for me. I have my racks filled now. I'm at the point where of I get another pipe, I need to send one on its way for room.

*I do not count corn cob pipes. Not because I find them less than stellar smokes. But because they are so inexpensive and function as a consumable pipe like tobacco is consumable. Cobs are supposed to go with me to those places that might hurt a pipe, like the hunting woods or fishing piers or the shop.
