I know you said no aromatics but have you ever tried deer tongue? How about tonquin? 1792 maybe?

jlr1, since you mention Burley, I suggest getting a pouch of Five Brothers. When I first tried it (it was actually one of my first pipe tobaccos), it didn't taste like much, but after going through a lot more varieties it definitely has its own flavour.

And it's just about guaranteed not to go out.

As suggested, I tried both Peterson's Irish Flake and Old Dark Fired. Although I am only a few bowls into each! it seems to me that they taste fairly similar. I am finding the ODF to be harsher and a bit less smooth than the IF. Sound about right?

If you really want to hit that top note? You simply must have a tin of Dunhill Nightcap. Be careful with it though because the taste can be so alluring that you get bushwhacked by the nic hit.

Odd, JLR, I would have said the exact opposite. Both are heavy duty, no doubt, but I find ODF to be more refined than IF. IF was a bit harsh and rough around the edges to me where ODF seemed more smooth and creamy. Hey, whatever works... everyone is going to taste things in a different way.
More ODF for me
This puts ODF on my short list!

That mirrors my experience with IF and ODF. While ODF is certainly a good blend there is just something, for me, magical about Irish Flake. It hits levels of refinement and subtlety that ODF just can't reach.

That was exactly my assessment. Both are great, but the IF seems more refined. I am guessing some cellar time on the ODF would make it nearly equal.

Thanks for all of the help. To me, these two blends have all the flavor and even the smokiness of my favorite English Blend (Dunhill Nightcap) but without the Latakia. I need to spend some more time with them. In thinking about choosing a tobacco for a cold weather smoke, I am not sure that the absence of Latakia is the sole criterion I would choose. In other words, I am looking for a very flavorful smoke in something that tastes completely different than the strong English blends I like.

GLP Cairo is a wonderful blend. It has a very

Distictive aroma and flavor. It has no Latakia

As far as I can tell. Wonderful orientals and I

Believe some sort of added flavor hit it's

Very tasty.

GLP Triple Play is a plug that is burley based, a uniquely pleasing smoke if you like burley. C&D Old Joe Krantz

is a distinctive burley blend that many favor. And if you want to go way out on a limb, Semois, the Belgium

burley is really in a class by itself. Some love it, some hate it, not too many stay on the fence. I think it is

delicious.

Peterson's Irish Flake is really growing on me. I am now reaching for it before Nightcap which was always my first choice in cold weather smokes. I tried the Old Dark Fired again and again, to me, it just misses the mark that Irish Flake seems to hit. Perhaps it will get a bit smoother when it has some age on it. It now seems as if my rotation is about set. In the colder weather, it will be IF or Nightcap followed by Gaslight or Blue Mountain (mountain blue)if I want a little less flavor/kick or looking for an all day smoke. In the warmer weather, OGS seems to fit the bill with no other choice in the running.I'll have to experiment on that as the warmer weather rolls around.
