What this suggests to me is the main beneficiary of McClelland's demise wasn't the remaining domestic pipe tobacco producers (i.e. C&D and Sutliff) but pipe tobacco manufacturers based overseas.
This also doesn’t surprise me. C&D and Sutliff weren’t going to be a replacement for McClelland in the hearts and minds of quality fans. They tended to look at SG, GH & Co, Germain’s, K&K, etc as providing the better product.
But as been stated, these companies are a niche within the niche.
Right now I’m happily smoking SWRA.
Lane 1Q has been at the top forever.

I await the results of your research.
My preliminary look at Malawi production shows big and steady growth.
I could not find any current international statistics with my simple Google search. I suspect we should also be looking at tobacco production in India and China, as well. Does anyone know if the new HU blends (particularly their "African Line") that are now being sold in the US are sourced from tobacco on the African continent?

They do use Indian and African leaf.

I just had to move a few bins of my cellar to get to my 2021 purchases (I wanted to crack a tin of 2021 Cringle Flake). After moving them, finding the tin, then restacking everything, I thought “J____ F’ing C____, I have a shit ton of pipe tobacco!!!” Well, at least for my own very modest rate of consumption. But I’m very happy that I have a couple of 6’ high stacks of bins to wrestle with occasionally.

It’s said all the time here, but for the newer guys I think it bears repeating:

Buy whatever you can afford ASAP.

These statistics punch a hole in the delusions that the business of pipe tobacco is sustainable as-is. It will likely collapse within the lifetime of many members of this forum.
Yes, this. ☝️ And secondly, whatever new draconian restrictions or taxes my state will foist upon the people, in its beneficence, for their own good.
And why my TAD was a touch manic in 2022-2023 when I picked this dirty habit up again, having only about 4-5 ounces of old tobacco when i got the ol' pipe box out of storage... Now i have slowed down (my hoard is secured!) and i encourage the rest of you to BUY BUY BUY!

But but but, "the tobacco industry is growing"[citation needed], at least that's what I've seen several claim on forum threads about STG acquiring MB/Sutliff.
I talked to some Laudisi employees down at Low Country and they said that sales for C&D were trending higher since 2020. How true that is, I don’t know. I do know that does not mean “the tobacco industry is growing”. However, it is a bright spot if true.

Not saying this is accurate but here is what ChatGPT has to say:

The U.S. pipe tobacco market has experienced modest growth in recent years and is projected to continue this trend. In 2019, the market was valued at approximately $1.65 billion and is expected to reach around $1.95 billion by 2027, indicating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.21% from 2020 to 2027.

This growth is influenced by several factors:

• Consumer Preferences: There’s a notable shift towards premium and artisanal tobacco products. Consumers are increasingly seeking high-quality, handcrafted pipe tobaccos with unique flavor profiles, contributing to market expansion.

• Regulatory Environment: Stringent regulations and rising health consciousness have led to a decline in cigarette consumption. Some consumers perceive pipe smoking as a less harmful alternative, which has positively impacted the pipe tobacco market.

• Distribution Channels: The rise of online retail platforms has made pipe tobacco more accessible, broadening the consumer base and supporting market growth.

However, challenges persist, including increasing health awareness and regulatory pressures aimed at reducing tobacco use, which could impact future growth. Overall, the U.S. pipe tobacco market is expected to experience steady growth, driven by evolving consumer preferences and increased accessibility through online channels.

It’s ChatGPT. It’s an idiot masquerading as an intelligence. Come to think of it, that’s not much different from most experts I meet…

Never mind.
