I spent a lot of time on forums and I think I do have an idea of what's going on there. Please keep in mind that most of the posts come from fresh guys who hold a ton of questions and the joy of showing off ... and actually there are not many posts, maybe one or two posts a day.
In local clubs and communities I met quite some guys with solid grasp of every aspect of pipe smoking. They did visit the forums but they usually remain silent.
It is a good habit to think of the preconditions (here they might be: who will jump out and show off? are they representative?) before throwing in a judgement.

No offense guys but my first wife was Chinese from Beijing and was brilliant at ruining our language. I got so used to 'Husband, Husband, question, question!' and another absolute winner was 'Husband, Husband! Would you like to be intimate?" which sort of takes the passion out of everything.

I had the pleasure and opportunity to have dinner with a very talented Chinese pipe maker at the Chicago pipe show and we spoke extensively about the pipe market in China. He said, because the upper class economy is very good in China, the luxury item market is booming including high end pipe sales. He said that there is a real knowledge deficit regarding pipes in general and how to smoke and care for them, however. Right now, buying pipes in China is more a status symbol with the importance placed on how much they paid for the pipe than anything else. Pipes are being purchased in the US then marked up significantly and sold on the Chinese market. He also said that there is a huge business in making replica's and passing them off as the real thing there. The consumers think they are buying the real thing and don't know enough to discern the difference. The pipe market in China right now is really fascinating from a socioeconomic standpoint but concerning from a pipe hobby standpoint.

I was talking to a pipe tobacco rep. recently and he informed me that they just shipped a 18,000 tin order to China.

He said one of the practices the tobacco stores do over there is when a person buys a tin of tobacco they give him a pipe.
