A good brush will reach down into the system area and it will take what seems like an eternity to clean.I did that. I'm wondering if it's in the system section and I can't reach that other than running alcohol down it.

I've got some little pipe brushes I ran down in there before the salt treatment.A good brush will reach down into the system area and it will take what seems like an eternity to clean.
I have bits and a dental pick. I'll see where I stand in the morning after the salt does it's things and then go in with those if I need too.I'll agree that often a drill bit is needed to get back to wood so you can draw out some of the embedded crap and sometimes you even need a deantal pick to clean the edges of the mortise.
The bowl looks clean with no cake. I would think bleach would have recked it, but I swear it taste like someone soaked it in bleach all day. Like hospital sheets smell.I spend a lot more time cleaning out the shank and mortise than the bowl itself usually.
In my opinion the shank/mortise is the source of problem more often than not.
The chamber might have a ghost, but will respond to reaming almost (but not quite) to wood then alcohol soak(s).
Some members recommend coffee grounds, alcohol retort and ozone treatments.
I've never had to resort to those.
Of my pipes, over 75% are estates arriving in varying condition from pristine to untouched in 100 years.
Make sure to shine a strong light down the mortise & shankI have bits and a dental pick. I'll see where I stand in the morning after the salt does it's things and then go in with those if I need too.
Ah, calls for a Latakia blend and a dram of Islay, preferably ArdbergThe bowl looks clean with no cake. I would think bleach would have recked it, but I swear it taste like someone soaked it in bleach all day. Like hospital sheets smell.
Just soak it in Ardbeg and consider it dedicated to latakia, ha ha.Ah, calls for a Latakia blend and a dram of Islay, preferably Ardberg
Im leaning towards bleach because its remarkably clean. The salt isnt even turning colors yet. And there is a sand mark on the stem as if someone tried to clean that and stopped.Sell it cheap. Full disclosure, of course.
I bought a pipe off one of the forums years ago & it had a undisclosed Lakeland ghost. Rather than screw around with it, I just use it for soapy Lakeland blends.
Remarkable though it may seem to many out there, some of us actually like the stuff.
Then again, maybe the soapiness in your pipe isn’t from tobacco. The weird things people sometimes do to ‘restore & flip’ estate pipes would shock you.

Health hazard lol. Yeah, youre right I might end up doing that. I didn't pay much for it though so I dont know. If nothing else I like the history behind the company. Who knows what I'll do.P.S. - if/when you give up screwing around with it, since you got it from ebay you can return it. They’re pretty good about products that might be a health hazard to their customers
The bowl is so clean my salt is still white after all these hours. Someone cleaned this too good. You're right one way or another.I've heard white vinegar will help with that ghost.
You could try using a correct, proper and safe pipe retort, but I wouldn't advise the cheap knockoff retorts sold online... they are dangerous and not real retorts.
But, if someone really did put bleach in that bowl, or cologne... I'd get rid of it... one way or the other.
I contacted the seller tonight he accused me of bleaching it and told me to kick rocks. Ebay said they'll look into it on the 13th.P.S. - if/when you give up screwing around with it, since you got it from ebay you can return it. That's already been done. I remembered tonight that earlier when I opened it I was excited handed my daughter the box and she said why is there a wet spot inside the box. I blew her off and was like I dont know throw it away who cares. It was probably leaking outta the pipe.Give the seller a bad review. If anything gets his attention, that will.
