I think people don't seem to understand what a "hobby" is.

A hobby is anything you do regularly in your leisure time (any time not spent doing work or chores or in school), for pleasure. Engaging in an interest IS doing a hobby by definition.

I don't get why people get so hung up on "hobby" like it can only apply to something like stamp/card collecting or playing a sport, or why they're so reticent to admit that something is a hobby, or how negatively people seem to view the term.

If you do it regularly in your free time, and you're doing it for pleasure, it's a hobby by definition.
Well, because some things aren't so straightforward.
I hunt for food, its not always pleasurable. I build and fix cars, its pleasurable, but I also do it to make money. Sometimes under a deadline, there isn't much pleasure.
What used to be a hobby farm is now a major source of income.
In my "free time" I eat and sleep.
Those aren't work, and are pleasurable, so must be hobbies.
I also reload ammo, but I thoroughly do not enjoy it. I do it because I fire hundreds of rounds a day, and ammo is expensive. Cheap commercial 9mm is around 20-25 cents a round. I can reload 9mm for 12-15 cents a round and its better ammo.
So hobbies can turn into non hobbies, and some things people do as hobbies aren't hobbies to others.
But I wouldn't change a thing. :)

I’ve had a long list of hobbies and obsessions over the past decades. Filmaking, photography, beekeeping, brewing, electronics, forestry/firewood, cooking/curing/smoking, gun collecting/competition shooting/reloading, computers…many more. At 62 I still keep up with a lot of them, but less and less. Two hobbies turned into vocations (I advise against that), but I am fortunate to have a job that I love that grew out of a hobby that I started in 1976.

I've gone through several over the years. I've collected military antiques, particularly Marine Corps antiques, for nearly 25 years. I brew mead, kayak, am teaching myself homesteading, and dabble in 3D printing. Once I get my barn/garage wired I plan on dabbling in wood working.

Unfortunately, I currently live in a desert - far from lush forests and rivers. There goes my interest in hunting and fishing - which are primary interests for me. Astronomy was a huge interest and still is, but now that I am older, I need a small telescopes rather than the behemoth I have lunked around for decades. Boating is a real interest to go with fishing, and now that I have a fortress of solitude along the Colorado River, I am interest in getting a nice 14--16 foot fishing boat and trailer. Cooking and making interesting cocktails continues to be an interest. I've taken a break from song writing and regular writing. It takes a toll. Completing out my collection of MCM impasto paintings by various artists such as Danny Garcia, Van Hoople, and Edward Barton among others continues to haunt me. Pipe smoking is something I do like breathing. Given I've been at it since I was a teen, I don't know about it being a hobby.

If I lived in California, I wouldn't have any hobbies, because California is already a hobby. I think I would burst like a bug on a diet of Mexican food, cocktails, bourbon, and other spicy things.IMG_8292.GIF

Before losing most of the use of my hands I loved Rubik's type puzzles, drawing, and painting. Now I mostly sit on my porch with a cane and watch the world go by. I may attempt learning Turkish to better communicate with my meerschaum carving friends.

I suppose that I don't think of the things I do as hobbies because, despite the overly broad definition, which could include serial killers, I grew up at a time when hobbies were more typically defined as activities like collecting stamps, coins, and butterflies, assembling models, working on craft projects, amateur astronomy, wood working, growing prize roses, etc.

Nobody would have defined reading as a hobby. Way too passive.

So despite the definition, I'll stick with interests.

I guess I have no hobbies as I have little to no leisure time. The driving force in my life these days is spent trying to improve my level of knowledge so, I guess, per the definition above, no leisure time equeals no hobbies.

I’m an avid clay pigeon shooter and competitively. Sporting clays is my main game but I shoot skeet and trap some. Upland bird hunting and ducks. But I have a garage full of various hobby equipment that I have had more passion for in the past and will again perhaps. A man needs a hobby or some interest besides work and family and their religion. At least I do.
