Going to throw in another vote for Nightcap. As someone who has dipped and does smoke cigars (like right now), Nightcap had the strength and density of flavor to hold my attention until I fell into the rhythm and pacing of a true pipe smoke. First bowl I ever burned completely down to ash without a relight, and it will always have a special place for me for that, if nothing else.

If he's a seasoned nicotine addict, I'd steer clear of 1Q and the other light aromatics. JackKnife Ready-Rubbed should be palatable and should have enough nicotine to be satisfying. The ready-rubbed version should make it easier for a new pipe-smoker to manage in terms of technique.
