Mephisto if you can find it. It was discontinued in the early 2000s but was one of my favorites at the time.

I remember Charing Cross and, particularly, Meridian to be really smooth.

For me, it was Gaslight. Quiet Nights is a very close second though.

Still have some tins in the cellar that look like they're about to blow, but for a latakia, that one to me is silky smooth and cant wait to try some with age on it.

Its like a nice Islay Scotch on a cold evening.

Gaslight is probably my favorite of the GLP blends.

Could someone help me understand what's meant by "smoothness" in a pipe tobacco?

I've smoked pipes for well nigh 15 years, I think, and taken personal notes on who-knows-how-many tobaccos, but I myself have never judged a tobacco in terms of "smoothness." Describe what you mean by it?

As for favorite GLP, for me it's Quiet Nights, although I can see how Windjammer could be a favorite if you like burley.

One which I haven't gotten to but keep meaning to is Meridian. From what I've read, and what I know of my tastes, I wonder if it will give QN a run for its money.

No clue on how others describe it, but I would call it an absence of roughness. A blend can be spicy and smooth, since it has a tingly spice but is in other ways smooth and not irritating to retrohale. Maybe "creamy" is an adjective that can be used together with "smoothness" on occasion too.

Smoothness is a particularly hard descriptor to pin down, but for me, Windjammer is the winner for having a very bold profile but not having any harshness in the way its flavors rest on the palate, and for always producing a very creamy smoke that provides a decent nic-hit and a good punch on the retrohale that you can definitely feel but doesn't overbear on you. For a more traditional VaPer, Stratford is very nice, especially with some age on it.

Chelsea Morning is also smooth. It's like a better version of Early Morning Pipe with added perique.

IMHO, I look at a pipe tobacco and a nice cigar as having no back of the throat irritation or rough edges. I'd put smoothness right up there with taste and flavor. My preference is for full bodied maduro cigars and stout pipe tobaccos. That said, a strong tobacco can also be smooth and creamy.
While not too strong, Father Dempsy is a good example of a smooth smoking pipe tobacco. puffy

As other have noted, “smoothness” is entirely subjective. Folks have mentioned blends here that they’ve described as smooth, which I would call spicy or acrid or something else entirely.

I guess I’m baffled by the original question. Or maybe “smoothness” just isn’t an attribute I look for or associate with a rewarding smoke. According to my journal, I’ve only tried about 180 different blends in my 42 years of pipe smoking, but there isn’t a single one of them that I ever described as being smooth.

Love both of these, except mine are flipped. QN is my go to and Gas Light is my runner up. I always try to pick up an extra 8 oz tin of each when GLP tobaccos are on sale.

Maybe Caravan. It has burley, in addition to latakia, va and oriental. I find that burley tends to smooth out a latakia blend. It also changes the flavor profile and balance but there's not so much burley in Caravan, I think, that makes it obvious.
