I have a Peterson System 303 that takes a 9mm, bought as an estate from SP. Not sure why they don't stock these new, I guess the demand is too low. They are available new on the Peterson site.

9mm filter pipes are very popular in Europe, more specifically, Germany. About 90% of pipe smokers use filters in Germany. The best retailer for 9mm filter pipes in the US outside of the major companies is ThePipeNook. Eddie is a filter smoker himself so he brings them to market when he can. He’ll also special order you a pipe or tobacco if you ask and he can get it

Out of curiosity, when did 9mm filters start being widely used/integrated in Europe? Who was the first company to use them in their pipes?

It's the pipe version of training wheels in my mind. Corrects bad technique and wastes tobacco.
Maybe you're right, the filter is training wheels. I've only been smoking a pipe since Feb. Maybe I've just been smoking the wrong thing through my unfiltered pipes. Kind of losing confidence in a lot of C&D blends, I just find them harsh compared to GH and PS.

Last night, I had some GH Coniston Cut Plug that I rubbed out nicely and I filled my tiniest little unfiltered pipe, a Dr. Grabow Starfire bent dublin (with stinger removed) that weighs about 30 grams and has a bowl about 30mm high by 15mm wide, tall and narrow. Damn if that thing didn't smoke like a dream! I swear that bowl burned for 90 minutes. I kept it nice and easy, didn't let it get hot. Fantastic smoke.

Now I want to buy another dainty pipe like a Peterson Speciality Smooth Nickel Mounted Calabash, or something similar.

When you have more experience, revisit C&D and GL Pease. Most other blenders use a lot of casings that really tame the tobacco. C&D leave their blends as unadulterated as they can.

Concerning health: Savinelli claims that their balsa filters reduce nicotine by up to 77%. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not the smartest man, so I don't know for sure, but I would suppose that if there wasn't some truth to this claim, they'd be open to some lawsuits. I don't know how to investigate the claim, as I haven't been able to find the research papers (and probably wouldn't know what I was reading if I did...), but these are the claims, and the agencies that are said to have tested this:

This patented filtering system has been tested both by the EURATOM Research Center of Ispra and by the CHEMICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY Inc. Research Center (USA) with, more or less, the same results: “..the filter has the ability to absorb 77% of the nicotine and 91% of the tar contained in tobacco without altering the flavour of same”. The filter is uncomplicated and easy to use." Savinelli B2C - F.A.Q - Products | Savinelli - https://www.savinelli.it/rw_en/faq-prodotti-en

Concerning flavor: I still think a great analogy is the filter verse immersion brewing example. The grind size/consistency, water ph/hardness, and ratios are analogous to your cadence, and packing when you smoke, i.e., how hard you draw, and the pack itself. This is the most important aspect of good coffee/smoking. Outside of this, you can change some of the qualities of your cup by the method you choose to brew. All things being equal, there isn't a better or worse choice, just a preference. A un-filtered brew will preserve some of the bass or darker tones (oils) in your cup, whereas a filtered brew will remove some of those oils, but, will highlight the sugars and acids making the cup more vibrant, although somewhat less deep. The same applies with filters: there's always a bit of a hand-off, but

I would take issue with the training wheels analogy as well: most people consider aromatics 'training wheel' blends, but, in reality, they actually require more technique to get 'em right. Likewise, filters have their place for advanced, as well as beginner smokers with the choice for or against being multifaceted.

I enjoy both, but just like my coffee, I like a more "vibrant" cup. That being said, if it were to be demonstrated clearly that the filter does indeed reduce some harmful effects of combusted tobacco, that would be a welcome plus.

About to say the same thing. Though it fits in great with today. Founding Fathers is one of their blends without many harsh edges. It's an aromatic that smokes easy. Slowing down mostly reveals more of the flavor of the tobacco less then making it less harsh. It's a favorite of the genre for me.
Just my opinion on them. I also think that system pipes are the best and people say the same things about them that I say about filters so take anything I say about smoking with a grain of salt.
One of the things I like about C&D are those little harsh edges. I prefer my coffee black and my whiskey neat. Might just be a how I am wired.

Sometimes certain pipes just work better maybe in general and maybe just with a particular smoker. Glad you have a pipe like that all pipe smokers could use that pipe. I have wondered if my smallest pipe smokes amazingly because of it's size or if it's just a great pipe.
Now I want to buy another dainty pipe like a Peterson Speciality Smooth Nickel Mounted Calabash, or something similar.
If smoking was tolerated almost everywhere I think I'd have 20 or so smaller pipes and just hit one after the other.
