Concerning health: Savinelli
claims that their balsa filters reduce nicotine by up to 77%. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not the smartest man, so I don't know for sure, but I would suppose that if there wasn't
some truth to this claim, they'd be open to some lawsuits. I don't know
how to investigate the claim, as I haven't been able to find the research papers (and probably wouldn't know what I was reading if I did...), but these are the claims, and the agencies that are said to have tested this:
This patented filtering system has been tested both by the EURATOM Research Center of Ispra and by the CHEMICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY Inc. Research Center (USA) with, more or less, the same results: “..the filter has the ability to absorb 77% of the nicotine and 91% of the tar contained in tobacco without altering the flavour of same”. The filter is uncomplicated and easy to use." Savinelli B2C - F.A.Q - Products | Savinelli - https://www.savinelli.it/rw_en/faq-prodotti-en
Concerning flavor: I still think a great analogy is the filter verse immersion brewing example. The grind size/consistency, water ph/hardness, and ratios are analogous to your
cadence, and
packing when you smoke, i.e., how hard you draw, and the pack itself. This is the most important aspect of good coffee/smoking. Outside of this, you can
change some of the qualities of your cup by the
method you choose to brew. All things being equal, there isn't a better or worse choice, just a preference. A un-filtered brew will preserve some of the
bass or darker tones (oils) in your cup, whereas a filtered brew will remove
some of those oils,
but, will highlight the sugars and acids making the cup more vibrant, although somewhat less deep. The same applies with filters: there's always a bit of a hand-off, but
I would take issue with the training wheels analogy as well: most people consider aromatics 'training wheel' blends, but, in reality, they actually require
more technique to get 'em right. Likewise, filters have their place for advanced, as well as beginner smokers with the choice for or against being multifaceted.
I enjoy both, but just like my coffee, I like a more "vibrant" cup. That being said, if it were to be demonstrated clearly that the filter
does indeed reduce some harmful effects of combusted tobacco, that would be a welcome plus.
