Besides, smoking luxury tobacco is the most fun you can have with your pants on.
And off.
I actually prefer LBF to the others mentioned. Not much of a penny pincher here, just a preference.

Good points! I haven't done the math of my smoking, but have with coffee. I figure I'm saving $7 per day by making my espressos and cappuccinos at home, even after amortizing the grinder and espresso machine, so what I spend on tobacco is no one's business! But it must be way less than $7 per day. And I will have to see what an average bowl full weighs.

Problem is with the human nature :)

Why to buy a tin of tobacco for 15$ if you can have a similar (arguably) for 6$ in bulk.

No one cares to do the math and break it down.
I would go even simpler here.

One usually smokes between 2 and 4 tins per month (many even less). So on a monthly basis you can save between 15 to 35$ approx.

For me does not worth it.

I think the price of smoking a pipe can depend on a couple of things, where you live, because we all know tobacco prices vary from country to country and also how much you smoke must be the biggest factor. Looking through some posts on here some guys smoke 12 to 14 bowls per day,now that can't be cheap especially in a country that tobacco prices are high.

To my mind, it is simple: tobacco grows like any other plant, and can be harvested and sold. If you get all the taxes and regulations out of the way, it's not much different than anything on the spice shelf.
As far as vices go, it seems the mildest. Overeating, sedentary living, alcoholism, pollution, STDs, etc. will get you much faster.
It makes sense to enjoy the best, but to me that varies a bit. Sometimes, a scruffy OTC is just what is called for. Other times, I like fancypants tobacco.
And as I look out there at a world of miserable people on anti-depressants who drink too much "exotic" wine, I feel no shame.

I’m a long time cigar smoker. I came to pipes only a couple years ago. Just about all pipe tobacco looks like a bargain compared to cigars.

oldgeezer, were you using Gerard back then? He always had great product. When I think about how much I use to spend on cuban cigars, my pipe tobacco is so cheap.

I definitely think an up-market blend is well worth it. But I don't think all the best blends are up-market either. I find some of each in my rotation, and I'm surprised at how good some of the medium priced and even cheapie blends are. I wouldn't want to be stuck with low-end blends only, but among them are some very good bowls of tobacco. Don's miss out on the high end blends, but don't feel obligated to them for every last bowl either, would be my advice.

I don't think that Cubans taste that much better than non Cubans to warrant the premium in price. Used to but not now, just me.

All tough, I had somebody here recommend a site where I could by Cubans years ago & I appreciated it & they were great!

I always thought Cuban cigars to be somewhat over-rated. Perhaps, in the US anyway, it was the "forbidden fruit" thing. Once the Cuban seed tobacco came of age in other countries well, Cubans had competition. Not that I didn't enjoy the odd Cuban over the years. Cuba is still capable of turning out a top cigar as Cigar aficianado reflects in their annual ratings.

Not only in the US. When people know that you are a cigar smoker, they start asking whether you are smoking Cubans or non Cubans? If it is below $100, then it is not a real cigar. If it is a non Cuban, it is not a real cigar. Blah blah.

A cigar is a very different kind of smoke. You can't really compare the two. I no longer smoke cigars, haven't for many years. I think the last one's I smoked were Toraños, or something like that. Cubans were better than they now are. You can thank Cigar Afflictionado for that. But that first issue, when they went all gooey over Hoyo de Monterrey double coronas, they were spot on. I got a cinematographer hired on a film and as a gift, he sent me a box of them. Great smokes. Cohibas were crap. The Romeo y Julietta Churchills were a great smoke as were the Partagas #2. But my favorite was the Flor de Cano Rothschilds. Those were amazing and nothing else has come close.

Nowadays, I have no desire for a cigar. Pipes are where it's at.

I wasn't a serious cigar smoker. Just enjoyed them now and then, as an undergrad, in the Navy when ashore, and later as a civilian after I quit pipe smoking in solidarity with my wife's quitting nails, I enjoyed the occasional cigar on business travel. So I never had a regular stogy per se. I did take several opportunities to try Cubans in Canada, and now and then when they came my way in the U.S., but never bought any. Within those limits, I much preferred Dominicans at various price levels to any and all Cubans I ever sampled (whatever their actual provenance). I tried to like 'em, and spent a little money trying to find one I'd like, but it never happened. If the good ones were so damned pricey, why was that so? Dominicans, excellent.

I've never had a Cuban, but I have had the opportunity to try many of the others. My Father is my favorite of the Cuban-likes, but maybe because of my pipe tastebuds, I prefer Kentucky Dark Fired MUWATs, Spectres, Chupa Cabres, Double Ligeros, and a handful of boutique Nicaraguan leafs.
It's like people saying Escudo is the best... McC's 2015 is the best... Nightcap is the best... Quality is subjective. When I hear someone tell me that Cubans are the best, I just respond that red is the best color, and corn is the best vegetable. :puffy:
