Edit -
Phillip, I just have to ask, have you ever set that fantastic beard on fire while smokin???

No, but you can see why I like longer pipes.

Im totally split on the whole softer and kinder words. So what if a witch gets whats good for her and the "good guys" win. I grew up in a time (not too many years ago either) when there was lead in the paint and we had Yard Darts to thow in the yard. I remember my mom driving the car while I stood up in the seat. It dont bother me to see a cartoon character smoking a pipe. Have you looked at some of the crazy crap cartoons on the air today? Maybe I just miss the good old days.

I agree with you bailey331. We are in a time of change and it doesn't seem that it's for the positive. Regulations and laws that are enacted to "make things safer" are stifling people's ability to think for themselves, not to mention their freedoms. Whoever thinks that all that is "new" is an improvement of the past, needs to reevaluate their thinking.

Where are the story books of the past? My grandma used to read me many stories from way back when and I realized that nowadays you just see furry animals in books. No pipes or tattoos on the characters...

Wow! Carlosviet, you are the master of finding pipe smoking characters. :worship: Dukdalf, I've just started collecting a few antique postcards myself!

I like Mister Dog. Crispian's Crispian is the John Galt of all Pipe Smoking animals that have found their way into children's books.

Yep, its official. We will allow 12 year olds to say F#$%k this and F@#$k that, let teenagers run the classrooms, disrespect authority, and take swings at policemen, but it is totally inappropriate to portray burning leaves in a piece of wood. Funny how everybody and thier brother want to legalize weed, but nobody wants to see a a pipe in someone's mouth. Because "its bad for you"

Well, I live in a society in which 12 year olds are not allowed to swear. The government is not going to legalize marijuana here probably in next 100 years and nobody wants that in my country. So seeing a pipe in a kid's mouth makes me a little uncomfortable. However I am totally against the idea of not using pipes in children's books.

I guess it doesn't really matter in the long run anyway. I started smoking cause the cigar rack at the Valero smelled good, not so much seeing it in any kind of media. I guess the same could be said for drug addicts. No one sees a gun slinging cowboy from a 50's western smoking a crack pipe and says " I wanna smoke crack like a real cowboy" :)

In some way, media affects people and kids, otherwise they wouldn't have earned that much. Society changes and there will be some pros and cons for sure.

Humans tend to ignore big problems and focus on symbolic ones. I agree it's not a good thing.

And the globe is littered with the remains of past civilizations, so we can see how important it is to get those changes right the first time....

Not a book, but Disney's 101 Dalmatians came to mind right away. In the first shot with Roger you see a pipe in his mouth, another pipe in his overcrowded ashtray, and a churchwarden on the ground: https://youtu.be/ulsjuiFO2J0

Nope, humans try to solve problems, it doesn't matter if it is big or small.

What I wanted to say is; 50 years ago it was not considered a bad thing to picture a kid with a pipe on his mouth, now it is some kind of not right thing to do. Most of the people will criticize it if you do so. So, in some way our society has changed and adapted to a new level. We are improving, making our life standards better. In this new level, a kid with a pipe on his mouth is accepted to be wrong.
