I went through a phase of smoking nothing but Petersons Irish Oak.......After about 10 months of using the same dozen pipes I accidently filled one with something else on the afternoon after a bowl of Irish Oak on the morning (can't remember what).
Very unpleasant..... I didn't realise how much of a ghost was left...granted I had used nothing but Irish Oak in the pipe for quite a while but I was shocked by the amount of taste that was left in the bowl!

The post is about dumping out a smoked bowl, basic cleaning, packing a new bowl. I assume that by this, a hot water flush, you need some good amount of time to let the Briar dry out, depending on much water and cleaning is needed.

This seems outside, the scope of what I was asking... hmm ;)

I hope not!

When you think about how much moisture-stress the cake and briar are subjected to with extremely hot water and mostly steam while you smoke for 45 minutes or whatever, a 20 second rinse/flush is a relief!

Essentially, the cake and briar don't absorb water in a post smoke flush, so you can smoke right away, and it does remove considerable gunk and you'll get a truer smoke on your next load. Done it many times, and hope this helps.

Enjoy!

The old view was that a pipe should rest for at least 24 hours before smoking again, and several days rest would be even better. Seems that recently the opinion has shifted away from resting the pipe, and towards smoking it as often as you want.

I am firmly on the side of giving the pipe at least 24 hours rest. I only have a small collection, so I do end up sometimes smoking the same pipe more often than would be ideal in my opinion, so it's more of a guideline than a rule. In any case, it has been my experience that I'll get a drier and tastier smoke from a pipe that has been given adequate rest between smokes.

All that said, making sure the pipe is good and clean is probably a much more important factor than letting the pipe rest for a day or two between smokes. So long as you are enjoying your smokes, there isn't really any wrong way to do it.

Every pipe I have smoked, the chamber will eventually turn into a sweeter smelling aroma, if I let the pipe sit for 2-3 days, that I have also noticed lends to a sweeter smoke.

So I let all my pipes dry for 2-3 days, waiting for the chamber to turn sweet smelling.

Every pipe that I have that has only sat for 1 day after smoking typically has more of a dottle, just a burned tobacco smell to it.

This has been 100% with every pipe, any blend.

I would say that typically with lighter blends, like Virginias over Latakia, the sweeter aroma in the chamber might come about quicker, but I have still noticed 2-3 days makes for the sweetest smelling chambers.

Smell test it after a few hours, then another time later and so on, and a day, two days, three days.

I run a bristle and soft cleaner through stem and shank, and wipe the chamber with a paper towel, then let them dry.

P.S. I assume, that based on ambient temperature and humidity the dry time, sweet smelling chamber will vary.

I had been making an effort to smoke different blends in different pipes. But I stopped worrying about it and now I just switch pipes in order to let a hot pipe cool down. I don't really find ghosting to be much of a problem as long as I scape em out good. Whatever ghosting there is doesn't bother me.
And I don't have a rack full of pipes to choose from either.

If you're wanting to make sure you taste a blend exactly as it is you could change pipes. That being said I have occasionally smoked two different blends in the same pipe without cleaning.

Here's what you can expect/case in point:

On Sunday I enjoyed a bowl of BSOM (Balkan Sobranie Original Match) in a CAO meer while in the pool with a glass of Bourbon. Good pairing, BTW. After that I let the pipe cool and loaded it up with some Dan Tobacco Sweet Vanilla Honeydew, poured another glass of Bourbon, and hit the hot tub. Another good pairing, BTW.

Initial light-up and a few minutes of puffing still had the Latakia in them. Not long after that though the sweetness took over and I could no longer tell the previous blend had been in there.

All was going great until a little ways past the half bowl mark I dropped the meer. (Not the one I dropped and broke earlier the same day. A different one.) Even if I could somehow get the pipe to relight after that I really wouldn't want to. Chlorine is a ghost I really don't want in a pipe.

Anywho, the point is the slight but temporary overlap of flavors didn't taste bad. Rather good actually and they didn't overlap for long. Those with better/more sophisticated palates might notice it more but I can't.

So as a matter of necessity and/or convenience feel free to change up blends. Just clean your pipe afterwards.
