When I first started out smoking, I pretty much stuck to just one pipe for the day, with one blend.

Today, I’m wanting to have a little more variety, like starting out with a bowl of one blend, then when it’s finished smoking something else, but It’s not always right away I switch up blends.

Sometimes I’ll smoke one blend in the day, then in the evening something else, but all with the same pipe.

I realize with some blends, there is going to be some clash in the bowl, at least for me I’ve experienced this on more than one occasion, the second bowl/blend not starting to taste as it should until I’ve smoked typically around 1/4 of the bowl.

If you also smoke several blends in the same day with the same pipe, besides running cleaners through the stem/shank, are you doing any chamber cleaning, or letting it sit for a certain period of time, before packing the new bowl, etc..?

I have two pipes assigned to Granger Duty. My best Smokers. Each gets a full day off, Saturated in Rough Cut Burley. Sweet pipes. Soon to meet my Peterson arriving Monday. I hope they play nicely, but you know pipes.

Not so choosy with the others, a collection of Grabows and Baskets. All but one are my preferred straight billiard.

These are for new blends and old friends from the cellar. Some are meer lined and not as prone to ghosting, I’m told. But my briars always smell sweeter.

As far as tobacco “clashes” it’s long been my habit to “parfeit” my bowls. So 3/4 Granger and topped off with anything else I want to smoke. I have no trouble with ghosts. Usually, I’ll top with something like Burley London Blend, Norwood, Sugar Barrel, Edgeworth, 965. It allows me to enjoy moments with and stretch out consumption of my jarred rarities.

My Crooner parfait lingered a bit! Thanks, Bing!

My problem is like to smoke a wide variety, I guess I’ll just keep it one pipe the same for the day, and just pick another pipe if I switch blends.

Same pipe for same blends all day for me. If im puffing different blends i just grab another pipe from the stand. It doesn't really take that much longer to clean 2 or 3 pipes once i have the stuff out just my thoughts.

Maybe a meerschaum or corn cob might but worth trying then?

I’ve been trying this in a few MM Cobs, but with one bowl of something strong, and then going mild, it doesn’t seem to work out good.

I can see how switching up between a mild Burley and a mild Virginia could work as an example.

I smoked recently some John Aylesbury Black in a MM Dagner, glad I let it sit for a few days, because next, I smoked Cringle Flake 2020 in it, and it seemed great, then I let the pipe dry out for a few more days, but I can still smell some JA Black in it.

Let’s just say, after my own experimentations on this, if I’m going to smoke another blend in the day, I’ll grab another pipe.

I just wanted to hear other people’s thoughts on this as well.

The only time I ever smoke the same blend twice in a row is when I'm fishing or out on the farm somewhere and I only have one blend with me, otherwise, I usually go through 5 to 6 blends everyday out of the same bowl; I only run pipe cleaners through every morning except in the winter months when condensation builds up quicker and I'll use a pipe cleaner a couple of times a day, and have never worried about letting pipes rest. In other words, if it's that big a deal to you, you should probably go all out and have a different pipe for each blend, otherwise, don't worry about it and live a more peaceful life like me puffy

Oh I certainly don’t worry about it.

I’m just finding that mixing up Extremes, even if it’s only one bowl smoked, doesn’t seem to go well.

Maybe going from an English to an English, or VaPer to a VaPer is ok, but when I try to smoke starting out on a heavy English as an example, then later try to smoke a VaPer, nope not working. The strength of the previous bowl of English is making the VaPer not takes good.

It’s all good, I’m just experimenting and seeing what others are doing and getting away with. :)

I usually vary the pipes, though not always. Today, for example, after one bowl through one of the Mauro Armellinis & then I ran 4 different leafs through a Karl Erik, just running bristle cleaners through it till they came out clean at the end. A lot of people do a water flush &/or a wet paper towel, but tell the truth, I'm just lazy. ??

You, Sir, are brave. Some folks who've been given step by step instructions, all sorts of assurances that the pipe won't melt, still stick with alcohol and special pipe fresheners. ($$) Some are proud that they will never try it!

The post is about dumping out a smoked bowl, basic cleaning, packing a new bowl. I assume that by this, a hot water flush, you need some good amount of time to let the Briar dry out, depending on much water and cleaning is needed.

This seems outside, the scope of what I was asking... hmm ;)

Sorry for any confusion, this wasn’t about a Pipe Cleaning post.

Today I accomplished what I was after, I sampled a little Dunhill Three Year Matured Virginia, Solani 656 Aged Burley Flake, and last Rattray’s Hal O’ The Wynd, one after the other in the same pipe.

No ghost issues, all smoked fine.

If it's only happening with those combinations, then set aside a pipe for each and only smoke the english out of one pipe and the vaper out of the other.
