Did you try packing looser? Tighter? Drying more? Less?

Did you thoroughly clean your pipe before smoking it?

Are you using the flame to directly light the tobacco? You should be using the hot air around the flame and pulling it down.

I use damp coffee grounds to remove stubborn ghosts.

I apply a thin layer of carnauba wax to the briar, let dry, and buff with a soft cloth. The stem I use mineral oil on.
