I'm like others and move to a much smaller pipe/smoke time in deep freeze of winters here...I can handle a 15-20 minute smoke or while I'm outside moving tons of snow (I hope not as much as last winter) with the blower, which makes the task more enjoyable (if possible)...I go to my cobs or my work-bench pipes for outdoor/winter smoke'in to agree with bubba :puffy:

I have never had a problem smoking a meer in the cold. I also smoke outside and have to deal with the cold. I have no idea why a meer would turn gray, but anything under 20 degrees I just stay inside or find a cigar bar/pipe shop.

So in other words Ernest, I should let whichever pipe I wanna smoke outside for a few minutes prior to lighting it, and let it rest outside after before bringing it in?
No! If you take a pipe out of your home in say, -12c, the pipes tempurature will be a uniform room tempurature (lets say 20c). If you allow it to sit outside before you smoke it, it will drop to a uniform -12c (or there abouts). When you go to light it, you will be applying between 200c and 300c to the inside of the tobacco-chamber, while the outside of the bowl remains -12c (well, perhaps comes up to -10c due to heat from your hand). This extreme and uneven is far more likely to crack your briar than simply lighting it while still warm from the house.

Remember, when you smoke your pipe, it gets warm - and stays warm (unless you let it go out).

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. From what I have assessed it looks like I will (have to) get a new meer with a small bowl. I'll make sure that I light it while it's still room temperature and coddle it while I'm out in the cold. I also have a new project for the "honey do" list - namely to close in the screened porch for my winter smoking pleasure.

During the winter, I go into my detached, insulated garage. I turn on the torpedo heater and enjoy a smoke.
My wife informed me that I need to evict the animal that has started living in there. Hmmm, compressed air or screaming dust collector, or just smoke something particularlly foul smelling.

I used to smoke on the balcony too but now I'm allowed to smoke inside. I will not go back out, being comfy and warm while smoking is so much better.

Well I can (and do) smoke indoors during the cold months, there is something to be said for sitting out on the patio, puffing away on my favourite Latakia blends, watching the snow fly.

Of course, I'm a pansy when it comes to cold, so I toss a space heater under my chair and a blanket over my legs when I do this.
