Smoking in the wind

So yesterday I smoked my pipe at work for the first time, was very nice and felt good the rest of the day...
Only one person said something about it, and that was "smells good, where do you get your tobacco"
Heres the thing though, it was pretty breezy and it kept stoking the fire and the bowl was getting
pretty hot without me even doing anything. How do you account for this? Pack tighter?

Believe it or not, I was just sitting on the porch, having some morning 1-Q. It was tremendously breezy, and I was just having a tough time enjoying my smoke. I had the windcap on, but I was still having a heck of a time keeping it lit, and not staying lit. I came right, got on my laptop, and figured I'd see if the experts at Pipes Magazine had any advice.
I didn't, however, have issues with it getting to hot, at least unreasonably hot. I'll attribute some of that to the wind cap. So definitely pick one of those up.
Beyond that, let's see what the long-term smokers recommend.

Windy days do make the tobacco burn faster and hotter, so be careful. A wind-cap is the only solution, besides as Bob Seger advocates, to seek shelter,shelter from the wind...

My solution as it is always windy here has been to try more course cuts of tobacco and most recently flake. This allows me to control the burn somewhat. I also try to smoke tobacco that I know will not fry my tongue if it does burn fast like Butternut burley.
