I was smoking a pipe long before my wife, but when she became pregnant with our first I stopped smoking indoors, I smoke outside or in the garage now. All my kids have always known I smoke and when outside I smoke around them.

They are now 16, 18, and 18 so when they leave and go off on their own, I don't know if I'll return indoors... in fact I'm thinking not. Ive rather become fond of not having a stinky house, well notwithstanding the stink of 3 teenagers and 3 dogs :P

No worries here as I don't have any kids yet... well unless you count two cats.
I'd just make sure if kids are around and you're smoking it's outside and it's not blowing in their direction.
After a neurologist told me my epilepsy was "idiopathic", meaning he has no clue why my episodes happen, I lost faith in western medicine. Yeah, I'll go to a surgeon if I have a heart attack, but I'm not going to a GP to put me on God knows how many medications for one minor ailment. It's too closely tied to the pahrmeceutical industry and its all for profit now. It's not like the old days when doctors healed you because they liked helping people feel better.

I occasionally smoke in my basement, after my 2 1/2 year old daughter is asleep. Other than that, I smoke outside. When she comes near me, or runs up to hug me or what not, I will move my pipe up and out of the way. She is very curious about my pipes, and loves to ask questions about it. I have recently started answering her questions, instead of pushing it aside.

I smoke in the house, the wife does not object. We also have no children, so no issue there. I do have young nieces and nephews and I don't smoke inside around them. I smoke outside in a spot where they are not exposed directly.

Now as for smoking in public, over the weekend I went to a beer festival with a few bands playing. There where adirondack chairs placed around in a grassy area. I approached a police officer and asked about a smoking area. He said anywhere in that area was fine. I did try and pick a couple of chairs away from others and enjoyed a bowl. No one said a word.

I'm outdoors only also or if the rain is bad I'll sit in the garage with the door open. My favorite spot outdoors is under an oak tree and about 15 feet away from both our patio swing and the grandkids playset. Most days none of the grandkids are not around so its not an issue. My only thought is to the damn squirrels in the oak tree pelting me with acorns. I used to hope they would get tired of the smoke or something. Then I realized they are more active when I'm smoking.

Have you ever thought to offer a bowl to share with them? I mean, if you were smoking in front of me without sharing, I would pelt you with acorns too...

Depends on what your definition of "vicinity" is. Would I smoke in the same room or in the car with kids, hell no. Would I smoke outside with kids around, sure.

This might have been an anecdotal observation or hypothesis on the part of your DR but the studies do not bear out this out. Asthma rates in families with children exposed to third-hand smoke (what a term) are 12% higher than in non smoking families according to a study of the subject from 2013. Respiratory tract infections were 36% higher though. Perhaps he transposed.
My point is, third-hand smoke (yeah what a term) has health risks for kids. I don't care about statistics, I just care about it being a real thing. Smoke particle on my cloth will cause my niece to become infected in the future? I have to make a decision between tobacco and my niece then.
