Driving to work is only a 10 minute stretch. Not long enough to enjoy a pipe. On long stretches I definitely enjoy smoking a pipe. If I am alone in the car I smoke heavy Latakia. If the wife is with me, a nice smelling Virginia.

Retired, so no work to drive to. But I do smoke in my truck. I always leave the window open a half inch. My step-dad was a cigar smoker and left the windows closed. His truck always had a film of nicotine.... looked like his windows were tinted!

I also only use wooden matches and lite at stops. The trick is to keep your pipe lit... tamping as needed and a slow draw. If it does go out, time for a short break for me.

I think I've told the story here of catching my pants on fire (flammable cow manure dust that flashed and then was out in an instant). All because a wooden match broke off in striking and fell to my feet. From then, on, I use wooden matches only at home, and a Corona lighter (needs only one hand) while driving.
Yes, I do smoke a pipe on trips over an hour. I have a couple of smaller pipes (Caminetto and Savinelli) as well as cobs that I like for this. I used to smoke cigars also. My 5-year old Trailblazer does not smell of pipe smoking after a day or two.
As for the danger of smoking with kids present, I think this is greatly overrated. When I was a kid my dad smoked Chesterfields in the car, with the windows UP and I was not affected. I will oppose any law that seeks to ban smoking in cars, with kids present or not.

Being a pilot, I never smoke in the airplane that I fly. I did in the olden days because many pilots smoked a pipe while flying or instructing. So, I did, too. But, I now refrain from smoking in the plane as I do consider it dangerous. Especially, in bumpy weather. However, I do always smoke in the car with the driver's window cracked open to draw out the smoke. My wife does not mind that. I was involved in a head-on crash with a drunk driver that crossed the center line in 1995. Luckily, I had just set my pipe in the ash tray! My injuries were significant. But, I still smoke in the car.
