In recent years many of us have promoted the use of heavy gauge food grade Mylar bags as an alternative to either keeping the blend in its tin or jarring it for the purpose of long term storage. Occasionally, someone has asked if Mylar is a good alternative for really long term storage.

Haddo's can be a polarizing blend. Some people absolutely detest it. Others absolutely love it. I'm one of those who loves this blend, especially when it has some years on it to smooth out the rough edges. I've bought many tins of Haddo's from 2000 to 2005. Unfortunately, a significant percentage of those tins were compromised, with the tins having corroded from the inside out. When a 2003 8 ounce Mylar bag of the stuff showed up on Pipestud's site I decided to take a chance and buy it.

I'm damned happy that I did so. The Mylar protected the blend perfectly and it aged and mellowed perfectly. It's the very best Haddo's I've ever smoked and beats out contemporaneous tins by miles. Snipping off the sealed seam at the end of the resealable bag I was rewarded with the heady rich scent of rum and well matured tobaccos. I've been smoking it for the last three days and every smoke is mellow bliss. Unlike the Esoterica bags, this is a heavier gauge Mylar, intended to last.

For me this answers that question about Mylar as a choice for long term storage. It's an absolute YES!

In my retirement as I’m going through my stuff I’m going to be bagging up a lot of pipe tobacco using the heavy Mylar bags.

Thanks for the update.

Mylar is great for storage. It works great and saves space.
I see many people confusing Mylar and plastic. I haven't done it, but heard some horror stories from guys who vacuum seal in plastic.
Someone will inevitably say they use plastic and its great, but ive heard too many bad situations. From losing the seal, to tasting plastic....which has science to back it up.
But ive never heard any issues with properly sealed Mylar.

Thanks Jesse; so the zip lock ones, or which are the gusseted ones ?
What size for a 50 gram tin ; 1 quart ?
The gusseted bags are also zip lock. A quart sized bag will easily hold several tins worth of tobacco. If you’re looking to use one bag per tin, you can use a smaller size and skip the gusseted versions.

They have a wide assortment of sizes. Just make sure that they are fully metallized for long term storage. Clear Mylar is not impermeable.

Got it; thanks Jesse.
You zip lock them or seal with an iron ?
