Misery and St. Louis still allow smoking in public buildings, etc. Gotta love us Podunkers.

I'm just going to spend more time at the beautiful JR Cigar shop I have nearby. Lots of comfy chairs, HVAC, beer bar, cute girls at your service. As well as McCranies Pipe Shop just up the road.

The smell of cigarette smoke makes me sick. But I enjoy the smell of a cigar of pipe tobacco.
What makes me even sicker is the heavy cig smokers who reek of the smell even when they're not smoking !! They leave their smell like an alley cat even long after they're gone. Their clothes are saturated with the crappy smell and just imagine what their house smells like.
Same goes for guys or women who overdo it and bathe themselves in cologne. Friggin shit reeks. I shook a guys hand once upon meeting and his stenchy cologne smell would not wash off my hand.
As far as the smoking laws go, I'm against them all.

Some laws are good. The categorical imperative is pretty sensible. The ten commandments. After that, it gets dicey.

I was against smoking laws, at first. But, like kirkland, cigarettes gross me out, so now that restaurants and bars are smoke free, I am pretty happy.
The rules that really piss me off are when you are in a casino, everyone is smoking cigarettes, but I can't smoke a pipe. That is the height of stupid. I have never met a cigarette smoker who was bothered by a pipe.

I remember being grossed out by cigarette smoking at restaurants. Now that it is gone, however, I miss it. Some restaurants did not allow it and I think they got irritated that people just went to the restaurants that did, or something like that, so there was a movement to ban it and now you cannot even have that good grungy feel of an all-night restaurant that's full of smoke because people are enjoying themselves. For me, it would probably depend on what I wanted out of the meal experience. For some types of food, it makes no sense. But after a long day, a good dive bar or restaurant should reek of smoke, in my view.

I always figured that if someone didn't like something, they could go elsewhere.

Don't like cigs, go to a non smoking place. Don't outlaw it. It's like....pipe smoking should be illegal except..

Many people that don't like cig, pipe, cigar smoke like & smoke hippy cabbage. Go figure!

My ideal law on that hippie cabbage is that if they want to smoke it, they have to grow it themselves. Then leave us tobacco smokers alone.

Cops, by and large, love such laws. We call them "tools of the trade". They are used only infrequently for "special" people needing an attitude adjustment. Most "special" people do not know they are "special." In the vernacular, not in public hearing distance, they are known as a**holes.
Every jurisdiction has such laws, little enforced, which are kept, tucked neatly away in the copper's brain, for those important moments a cop savors. Legends are built on such moments.
So you are saying they are handy for when a police officer wants to abuse his authority? I'm glad not all law enforcement looks at things in that manner, and I've known many that would never do what you are suggesting.

Ohhhh Maaannn... I admire and respect Warren and his thoughts he posts here. There's a lot of common sense, wisdom, and experience there.

torque: No abuse at all. Simply the selective enforcement of the law. Cops have discretion when working. Would you really want a citation every time you make an illegal lane change. Should every kid with a beer be charged? Do you really want every guy who plows snow or allows his grass cuttings into the right of way to be charged?
Rather have a citation when a headlight goes out or a simple verbal warning? If so, simply advise the officer you are talking with. He'll likely oblige you with a citation.
I seriously doubt you know any coppers who have not selectively applied the law. You may but, I do doubt it. No cop cites every driver he stops or arrests every kid he finds on a Friday night with a case of beer in the car. On busy nights sometimes a drunk driver is allowed to take a cab sp the officer isn't off the street for a prolonged period of time.
hobie1dog: As "The Ten Commandments" is a singular item I believe I am correct. However, I suspect even the most pedantic of teachers would accept either is or are. Is certainly sounds more correct. Where I was wrong was in using "Those" instead of "The" and not capitalizing commandants (Just caught that error.) So, you win! Mea culpa!

Better than you think maybe. I majored in English and still get confused. I try to blame age but, it's really laziness and not paying attention when proofing.
Thanks though. I need to be pulled up short now and then. Keeps me humble. :worship:

Someone once said: “Those who ignore the past will relive its ills.” There are many versions of this saying, but they all mean the same thing. If it didn’t work then, then it won’t work now!
Because of my love of tobacco (pipe, cigarettes, chew) I read everything I can get my hands on that involves it. Much of the literature that I have read covers the history of the weed, and its impact on society and its governments. Two such good reads are: Iain Gately – Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization, and W.A. Penn – The Soverane Herbe: A History of Tobacco.
Under some regimes the penalty for smoking was death, and it wasn’t a quick death, either. They would pour molten lead down your throat, but people would still continue to consume the weed. In many cases tobacco was heavily taxed to raise the price out of the reach of the common man. Does this sound familiar? Then the powers that be realized how much they liked that money that was being added to the coffers, and promoted smoking. Tobacco is a big cash crop here in the USA (production for 2016 was well over 300,000 short tons), and the government knows it. They will not cut off their nose to spite their face, but they will act like they are all concerned to appease the “we have to take care of you” liberals. Well, I can take care of myself, thank you very much!
Way back in the sixties I did smoke my share of hippy cabbage, and had enough. So, I will not condemn those who smoke it now, but its recreational use is still illegal in a majority of the States (I live in New York :( ) and under federal law. A little while back I was at a concert, and pot was being used freely and openly in front of law enforcement and everyone else. I decided to have a cigarette, and fired one up. You would think I had just sacrificed a new born infant! I was turned upon by all the “high” patrons that surrounded me, and law enforcement to boot! And I was smoking something that is legal! They said I was trying to kill them with my second hand smoke, but there was no concern at all for all of their "second hand" smoke! With all of the smoke that they were generating, I would have been surprised if you could have even smelled the little bit that I produced.
Yes, I am addicted to nicotine, and like any other addict I will pay what every money that is needed to get it. I'm going to start growing my own :D! Another great read is: David The Good - The Survival Gardener's Guide to Growing Tobacco For Smoking, Barter, Medicine and $$$.

Was walking through a strip mall here in northern California the other day on my way to a 'smoke shop' to get some pipe cleaners. I was walking behind a group of kids who must have been no older than 10 that were passing around a joint. Nobody said a word to them, but if you smoke tobacco within 20' of a doorway someone will always give you crap about it or you will be ticketed if a cop sees you. More and more towns are passing ordinances that prohibit smoking in public, as long as its tobacco. I imagine in 20 years californians will be buying tobacco from mexican cartels while going to the corner liquor store for a pack of camel greens.

@ Roddy If you had told me that even five years ago, I would have thought NO WAY! is that ever going to happen.

edit...and I was big time into weed from about '69 on, for a long time.

Warren, my last moving violation was when I was moving at about 2 MPH. It was at a merger between two on / off ramps of major routes. When there was a break in traffic, I slowly moved into the other lane. Then I was immediately pulled over and given a ticket for crossing on a solid line instead of waiting for a break in the dotted line. The cop had multiple people pulled over and was writing tickets as fast as possible, for this infraction. I agree that there was a jerk on the site, but I don't think it was me this time.
