I was told by the old timers on the alt.pipe newsgroup that I should give a brand new pipe a days rest after one bowl. As far as i was concerned these guys were professional pipe smokers. I also got the advice to build a cake to a dimes worth and that my pipes will smoke cooler and dryer. I was also told to dedicate pipes to either genres or to specific blends. I was also told to clean the piss out my pipes after every smoke with fluffy and bristle pipe cleaners. Then I was told to do deep cleans with Everclear only. There seemed to be a lot of rules as I know I am forgetting some but I had no other sources of info so I followed that particular dogma and it has worked well for me for over 20 years.

I just remembered I was told not to smoke aromatics in the beginning. I was a cigar smoker at the time and I tried Escudo and it opened my eyes to how good a pipe could taste. I smoked English blends from Dunhill and Pease and other things from Esoterica.
It didn't take long before I got into smoking flakes. The first ones besides the Escudo was Astleys no 109, Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug, Hamborger Veermaster, Three Nuns , Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky and a couple more I am probably forgetting.

I eventually lost my taste for English blends but I am still smoking my original flakes today along with many others. I have a few tins left over from 2000-2001 and will get to them eventually.

Smoke, cool down. pipe cleaner through stem and air hole. paper towel in socket and bowl. Fill it up and start again. I don't want a pipe that dictates to me how to smoke...
Just my 2 cents

You can smoke it 5 min after the first bowl, let it cool down reload and repeat. Best practice is to run a pipe cleaner through it after each smoke. If you’re smoking aromatics also want to make sure the bottom of the bowl isn’t goopy.

the rotating pipes bit was just a way to get people to buy more pipes.
Shhhh! My wife doesn't need to find that out!

I have a large enough collection that i can afford to give each of my pipes a good rest between smokes, usually smoking a particular pipe no more than a couple of times a month. That tends to keep them fresh and sweet so that I need only do major cleaning or reaming every couple of years; although I run pipe cleaners through after each smoke. When purchasing a new pipe, I usually smoke it several times over the first couple of weeks to build up a cake; although in the last couple of years, I've been buying more estate pipes than new ones.`

I only have 1-2 pipes a week at this stage, but if I smoke two days in a row I'll usually use a different pipe. If it's true that resting a pipe for 24 hours is best I'll have no problems.

Maybe it's not necessary but I like Virginias which can smoke kind of hot, so I am more careful that way.

I've always been skeptical about the "smoke a pipe and then let it rest for a day" advice. I view it the same as the theory that you have to spend the equivalent of two months salary when buying an engagement ring.

My grandfather was a pipe smoker (He died in 1979). He smoked the same pipe multiple times a day and simply ran a pipe cleaner through the airway and wiped the bowl out with his handkerchief. I still have one of his pipes (Yellow Bole Spartan Briar) and it is still a decent smoker.

While I do have a pipe rotation because I have 65 pipes, when I get a new one, I break it in over two or three days by smoking it, let it cool down for 10 or 15 minutes and then smoking it again. None of my pipes have been harmed or damaged in this manner.

When internet wasn't available to everybody, there used to people who smoked same pipe multiple times a day, and everyday. They rarely cleaned the pipe, and after number of years, when the pipe burns out, will just buy a new pipe. So, yes. You can smoke your pipe two, three or more days in a row. It might be better if you clean it out after each smoke and let it cool down. But it's your pipe. Do what you feel like doing with it.

Smoke away. Enjoy it as much as you want. Clean regularly. If it burns out, buy a new pipe. That having been said, I do feel that a pipe will smoke sweeter if allowed to dry.
