I am a criminal defense attorney, and I work out of my house (my basement, to be specific). I joke that my office reflects a particular federal executive branch department in that it is filled with alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. I am "allowed" to smoke occasionally at my desk (which privilege I do not abuse as I do not want to be exiled), and I am "allowed" to smoke my pipe in my living room chair on particularly cozy holidays, like Christmas. Otherwise, I smoke on the back patio and usually do have attendees, such as the aforementioned wife and daughters. I do live, however, by the motto "it is better to seek forgiveness than permission." If I get caught smoking indoors more than "occasionally," I just say "I'm sorry" and finish the bowl.
