I have 5 briar pipes. 2 are still un-smoked. The other 3 have each had one tobacco in them. Is it ok to dedicate a Latakia pipe to Latakia types without being unable to appreciate the differences? I currently don't plan to smoke any aromatics. Can I follow an english/balkan in a Virginia pipe since Virgina is mild in comparison? Do all pipes have to be "dedicated"?
I don't worry about dedicating pipes beyond avoiding flavours that clash. Generally I just try to avoid putting Aromatics is a Latakia pipe, and vice versa.

Virginia blends go in any pipe depending on what accent I want at the moment.

Of course it doesn't hurt to dedicate a pipe to any given blend once you find something that particularly interests you.

I think another good input if your trying to find flavors in tobacco is to have water, iced tea, scotch, bourbon or rye and wine available to sip between trying another tobacco this will help clean the palate and really help you find what your looking for. I also will try to focus on one flavor with a bowl it helps a lot just like smelling bourbons your not gonna get all the smells at once.

When I first started I tried 3 completely different blends - Captain Black Cherry (Yuck) Frog Morton On the Bayou (Yum) and Sam Gawith's FVF (Ehhhh...wasn't for me at the time)
These are drastically different, and I think you will be able to easily pick out which one has latakia, which one is a straight VA, and which one is cased with something.
It was a simple and effective way of prepping myself, or my tongue rather, to what differences there are on a significant scale.
Let me know how it goes man.
