Howdy! I'm Mike; I'm from Indiana. (If you read my post on the New Members Introduction, I apologize for repeating... but I felt like adding the background here too.)
Our family was vacationing at Brown County State Park a couple weeks ago, and we kept running into this older gentleman who was smoking a pipe. My wife said it reminded her of her dad, who occasionally smoked a pipe. She really loved the smell of the cherry blend that he would smoke. My dad also occasionally smoked, and I had kinda always been interested in the idea. We looked in a couple "men's toy stores" in Nashville, but didn't see any pipes for less that $40. I figured there must be a cheaper way to try this out.
So, when we got back home, I started researching "how to get started in pipe smoking". I quickly discovered that this site is THE PLACE. I've been lurking here for a couple weeks. I also researched local tobacco shops; I found a B&M whose website listed all sorts of stuff I recognized.
So, I stopped in on Tuesday and picked up a MM Legend, sampler packs of Lane 1Q and MacBaren Cherry Flake, some pipe cleaners, a tamper, some matches, and some filters - all for about $22. I showed it all to my wife when I got home; she didn't know that I had been looking into all this. Considering the fact that she is 100% against cigarettes (as am I), I took her approval as somewhat surprising. :)
A quick note: I especially love the "Cheat Sheet for New Pipe-Smokers" - very helpful when trying to start from a point somewhere other than total ignorance. :)
So, today I had my first bowl - of 1Q. I went through an entire box of 32 matches - for a couple reasons: (1) I was a little tentative and not sure what to do, and (2) I was outside on the front porch, where it was windy and rainy; about half of the matches didn't stay lit long enough to do any good. There were a couple times where I got the bowl well-lit where it would stay lit for 10 minutes or so, and that was also when I enjoyed my smoke the best.
I could tell that I wasn't inhaling about 98% of the time, because I could really tell the 2% of the time that did inhale. :)
I really did enjoy this first bowl. There was very little dottle left (a couple flakes); mostly ash. Took me about 45 minutes altogether.
I think that I will try the Cherry Flake tonight, after supper.

Welcome to the forum and our hobby, it's good to hear that you are doing well for your first time smoking a pipe. Congrats again and I would definitely advise you to look around here and find some things about flake, since flake tobacco can be difficult for starters.

Ron - thanks for the tip. I will indeed look around a bit. I had a couple different "cherry choices", so we'll see how this goes!

Welcome gronk! And good call on the MM Legend. I have one and it is a great pipe. Thanks for sharing the story of your first smoke. I can't remember my first time -probably snitched my old man's pipe and some Borkum Riff (maybe it was Capt. Black) when I was a kid. :) I do however remember where and when I bought my first pipe of my own.

Thanks to all for the replies!
I looked around the site a little about flake tobacco, and realized why I was a bit confused: This sample is already in ribbons (about 1/8 inch wide). The pieces are somewhat wider and longer than in the 1Q sample. It seems to be neither too moist nor too dry - the pinch test doesn't leave it stuck together nor crumbled.
So, given than - is it basically the same approach as the 1Q? Should I pack it a little looser/tighter?
By the way - I'm REALLY looking forward to learning as I go. It's like Musical Instruments and Ham Radio and Guns - easy to get started, a lifetime to learn (and spend money on).

Welcome and congratulations. It is indeed a pleasure to have such a wealth of information at your fingertips. I know I wouldn't be doing as well as I am if it were not for this forum, the radio show podcasts and youtube. Good luck and happy smoking.

gronk, welcome to the site, you have now entered a world consisting of PAD and TAD, your life as you know it has been changed forever. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your first bowl, don't worry about how many matches or how many re lights it takes to smoke a bowl.
I am not familiar with the cherry flake but if it is a true flake tobacco, you should grab a pair of scissors and cube cut the flakes. Cut them into 1/8" or so squares, use the three step packing method and make sure you have some resistance when you draw on the pipe before lighting up. You want it to feel like sipping through a straw, but not as tough as sipping on a frappe. Also make sure the tobacco is at the proper moisture. Do a search on the pinch test.
Most of all, pipe smoking is going to require a great deal of patience on your part, it takes time and effort to learn how to smoke a pipe, no one get's it perfect in the beginning. Please do not be afraid to ask questions, it is what we are here for.

Welcome to the forum and hobby.
Good call on the 1-Q...many here cut their teeth on that....and many here haven't departed from it.
Prepare for a learning curve....but a great hobby with a great community.

Welcome aboard!

We're a mad bunch, here, but all good. Welcome to the hobby - now run, before you find yourself in the grips of PAD/TAD (Pipe Acquisition Disorder/Tobacco Acquisition Disorder - took me ages to look those up...)!
There'll always be the "I wonder what that one tastes like" or "ooh, a pretty pipe..."
Keep us posted, and enjoy!

Welcome Mike, your off to a go start, keep reading here and asking for advice. Packing is very important for a good smoke, depends on the form of your tobac rather it be flake, medallions, ready rubbed, rope whatever, all require a different packing method depending on how you prep it.I think for the most part some dryness of the tobacco will improve the smoking experence by reducing the wetness and steaming affect of smoking the pipe.Good luck to you in having many great pipe smoking experences.I live in Louisville Ky.What part of Indiana do you live in?Are you close to louisville? Please keep us posted on smoking your cob, oh yeah as soon as you can get a nice briar pipe, i think it will enhance your pipe smoking experence.
Take Care.
Mike Lyvers.
