MikePhillips brings up an interesting question. How do you perceive Hefner. To me he is not a role model, but rather someone of whom it might be said, observe Hefner and do the opposite.
I have no qualms with Hugh. Playboy is not without controversy, but became a smashing success with high quality writing and of course popular photos of naked women. I see no issue with that.
I agree with voorhees, and while I don't think I would model myself after the man, I do not consider him creep, but a good businessman.
When I saw the ads for the pipe years ago, my reaction was that I wouldn't be caught dead with one.

I don't have a problem with Playboy or similar publications. I'd rather have "adult content" in an obvious and dedicated place rather than, say, page 3 topless models that appear in some UK newspapers.
Why is it they always pick the worst possible role models to try to pitch a product? Smoke the pipe that Hef smokes?? This is what they used to call an "appeal to authority" logical fallacy, i.e. "Arthur Godfrey smokes (name omitted) cigarettes, therefore you should, too!" And then Godfrey goes and dies of lung cancer. Suggesting that one smoke the pipe that Hef smokes is like suggesting we should vote for a candidate that Donald Trump recommends. For want of a better term, I'll call this "appeal to buffoonery."

I guess I am on the flip side. I happen to subscribe to Playboy and enjoy the magazine from cover to cover. I believe I started my subscription in 1993 (while the internet was in its infancy) and I can tell you I got more cigar, whiskey, and travel reviews from Playboy than anywhere else. I also have the BEST Bloody Mary recipe that accompanies an outstanding home made burger from Playboy.
Now do I take all the shenanigans with a grain of salt? Of course. I do have an admiration for the man and being in sales I have a bit of an ego but in no way, shape, or form do I at all want to resemble any of the narcissistic, autocratic a**holes that you see on TV.
You all may not agree with what he does, but he fought a good fight at a time when sex was something that wasn't talked about in the open and he got results. Since he is a pipe smoker, maybe we need someone like him to take up our fight for OUR civil liberties from a smoking standpoint.

I like Hef. I don't question his morals and I definitely do not want to emulate the man, but I have a certain amount of respect for him (more or less). He never pretended to be some kind of saint. He put it all out there and lived the life many men (at least during the 1960s-70s) could only dream of.
I think he was - but he kind of admitted it too. He even said he began smoking a pipe strictly for his image. He could be called a marketing genius IMO. He defined himself as the brand and the brand was "cool".
Playboy's heyday was the late 50s-60s and the definition of "cool" back then were things like James Bond, european cars, snazzy suits and Playboy I think he aspired to fit that ideal. And Hef aspired to the same ideal too.
I don't really judge Hef or the magazine as good or bad. There are strong arguments against the perils of pornography (which have some merits). Still, right or wrong, I think it's time had come and Hef was the first to push the envelope and he made an empire out of it.

Much of our views of Hef are in the light of history, which certainly shines differently than that of the present. Hef was THE iconic Playboy of the 50's & 60's, intentionally modeling himself and his lifestyle after the images of James Bond (the playboy, not the spy) and others of the time. He had what most of us guys in those days wanted: girls, fast cars, girls, good liquor, girls, natty clothes, girls.... and that's what sold the mag and him. As the years went by, his image tarnished for various and good reasons.
Using Hef to sell a pipe was no different than the many uses of celebrities to do the same thing today. Remember, OJ was used to sell a lot of things too, until his mistakes caught up with him.
