Dave- A donde esta? I love visiting good pipe shops anywhere, and I don't know where you live, even roughly.
As for beating people due to ignorance? There'd be hardly anyone left! Now, arrogance, lying, cheating: those are beatable offenses in my view. Bullying and abusive behavior also call for beatings, but with a cat 'o' nine tails!

Yep, Allegheny Smokeworks in Blawnox is the real deal. El Fumador in Sewickley is pretty nice as well, but Smokeworks is one fine operation.
Which shop in South PGH?

Closest one to me is a cigar joint about an hr away & everything in a tin is NYC prices. I'm partaking of their house blends whenever I pass by. So far the aromatics are disappointing.
The store is in a pricey part of Westchester, NY so I don't think my infrequent minuscule purchases affect them either way.

I've been planning on curling my mustache, but I'm certainly no hipster. I'm just embracing the beard and mustache (may have to change avatar photo) And who cares if someone's a hipster anyway? Everyone has a style, whether it's a fad or a style all their own. At least the mustached guy was working at a tobacco shop. It's a start, right? Not knocking you Ember. Just saying, why not go in from time to time and lend them some of your knowledge on the subject of pipes and tobacco. It will only help them and they might even appreciate it.

The Pittsburgh Pipe Club meets the 2nd Saturday of the month at Allegheny Smokeworks, Blaw Knox, PA (off of Rt 28) from around 10 AM until at lest noon+. We have a small pipe club in Washington County that meets the 3rd Friday of the month at a member's home in Cannonsburg, PA. Meetings for both groups are posted in the Facebook group "Pittsburgh and Washington County Pipe Clubs". It is a closed group, but just request membership and you can get the information. There is a cigar/pipe shop at the Old Allegheny Shopps on Rt. 51, in Whitehall. It is just past Baldwin High School on the left if you are going south. The shop was previously located in Caste Village for many years and they are upgrading their pipes and pipe tobacco selections. I am usually at the Old Allegheny Shop regularly on Wednesdays from about 1 - 2:30 or so.

I suspect someone with some pipe knowledge might want a bit of remuneration beyond just the standard clerk minimum wage, and therefore the uninformed folks manning the cash register. If either of the clerks, or both, show a glimmer of curiosity, you might offer them some threads to pull. Put him or them onto pipesmagazine, and the sponsor retail sites, and so on. Most of us can spot the deficiencies of people a mile away. The trick is to spot undeveloped talent and prompt it into motion. Clerking in a store can be powerfully boring. Giving something to engage the mind, it's possible these people would develop some actual interest.

Olde Allegheny is upgrading their pipe/blend selection? That would be good news; I used to frequent them weekly when they were at Caste Village, and then I moved to Punxsutawney for seven years, missing their move and losing track of them. I rediscovered them later traveling down to the Tinderbox (now gone) and stopped in to find no pipes and only 6 bagged house blends - all flavored. I have not been back since 2005. I'll check them out again.
There is also Jernigan's Tobacco at the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon. It is very cigar orientated but still worth a visit at least once. It is my local source for tinned Mac Barens and bulk Stokkebye's.

Oops, it is quite possible that Jernigan's is not open. This of course shows how seldom I shop it, I guess. If true, sad news for nice people - those high rent malls and anti-smoking rules?
