Well, not measured 50 ft but .... for example when I had a gig at the mall we would have pipesters circle by the door, like 10-15 feet to the side, it's a courtesy thing methinks instead of smoking IN FRONT of the door blowing clouds of smoke at every passerby. Sad to say most people who smoke cigs are not following the same rules and do it rather obnoxiously. A lot of other factors also go in that equation, i.e. there are less "busybodies" here than let's say the East Coast ....

Me myself, I smoke in my backyard, and in my truck. I put out my pipe for my asthmatic mother, and my two little nephews.

Not a good idea. When smoking laws were enforced in Spain, a group of people decided to do a public demonstration in front of Madrid town-hall, so some hundreds gathered to smoke there as a way to protest. It was a disaster. The cloud and stench was so big that even smokers would do a detour to not get tainted by that cloud. Like the putrid smell of an airport smoking room, but in the middle of the street...
The demonstration caused more antipathy that friends.
Even people who like the smell of tobacco, particularly pipe tobacco, hate the smell of stale tobacco in clothes. I do not live in the USA, but I admit that I have an habit unpleasant for others and I admit the reason behind marginalizing and delimiting its practice. I hope that they allow for some scape valve, though.
