Penguin bought some tobacco a while back, ((Chocolate and Honey)) and it smelled so great ^_^ well I tried it yesterday...and it tastes like crap. Made me really sad. The smoke smells fabulous, but I couldn't finish off a pipe of it cause it just tasted so icky.
Are there a lot of tobaccos that will do this?

I purchased some "Wally World" bulk tobacco... Vanilla.

It actually tasted good for about 1 minute.

After that it tasted like a burning Chemical Plant smells.

I'm way out of my depth here, talking about aromatics -- of which I seldom partake. But it seems to me that there are two kinds: one being Burley leaf cased with artificial flavoring, which, it seems, would work as well as soaked cardboard; the other being quality leaf (that you can actually taste) that is lightly flavored or complemented by toppings. I don't like heavy-handed approaches to flavoring. If I can pick up the taste of good, quality tobacco, then I'll accept just about any decorative flavors and scents used to enhance, or at least work with, the tobacco.
ps. I don't mean to imply that Burley is not quality tobacco -- I smoke tons of it. (Well, pounds, anyway :)

pps. I think it was Pease, among others, who avers that there is no such thing as unflavored Burley on the market.

ppps. I can't recall your experiences from previous posts, but 1-Q delivers both good taste and aroma, if you require both.

"laundry detergent" ^^ hahaha, love it! Since we're going that route I would say scented lotion, definitely not something you want to injest!

The tobacco Red is talking about is a 3.5 oz tin of Mac Barren Honey & Chocolate. The label reads "Honey & Chocolate A Fine loose cut blend made of a very special kind of cavendish. The long and delicate cavendish process makes this blend soft and smooth with a taste of honey and chocolate. Experience the great taste and the softness of this tobacco. " The tin is stamped may 2009.
I am surprised how bad this tasted especially after some of the reviews I read. "http://tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=H&TID=2882" Many of the reviews complain of too much flavor in the smoke or go on and on about the flavor. All me or Red could taste was something along the lines of a cigar left in the sun too long then possibly re-hydrated with toilet water. I will try and give this blend another try in some other pipes on the chance it was the pipes and not the tobacco. I fear this is not the case how ever as one of the pipes was reds new and very clean little meerschaum.
I am planning to get her a decent amount of the Altadis 1M and some 1-Q from smoking pipes next week. I know she likes the 1M a lot and after hearing form all of you I am sure the 1-Q will be as good if not better.
Have any of you tried the Mac Barren Honey & Chocolate? I am curious if I just got a bad batch, left it in the tin too long, or if its all this bad.

I have the same blend. Definitely not a fan at all. Worst part of it all, I paid a little under $18 while in vacation in New Jersey.

"Where on line can I purchase some 1-Q"
I would think you can get it from jrcigar.com. Call and ask. I know their wholesale division, "Santa Clara" has it in 5 lb. bags. If they'll sell you one it would be the cheapest way to buy it. Haven't in a while, but I used to smoke it occasionally my self. Not a bad aromatic.
I have a simple way to tell if I would like a blend without even smoking it. If my wife likes the way it smells, it'll smoke terrible...

Unfortunately, this happens with a lot of aromatics. The tin aroma doesn't transfer over to flavor in the smoke.
One thing to keep in mind is; when smoking an aromatic, you have to slow your smoking pace way down. You have to smoke really slow and cool to pick up on the flavors.
Since there are a lot of added sugars from the flavoring in an aromatic blend, they will burn hotter and the hotter that they burn, the more flavor that is lost. That is one of the reasons that I don't agree with tobacconists recommending an aromatic to beginners. Most aromatics actually need more experience to smoke them correctly to pick up on the flavors that are offered in the blend.
As always, there are exceptions with some well done aromatics that you can taste the flavors without much effort or experience. The key is to not get discouraged and quit if a some aromatic blends let you down flavor wise.

Also if you want an aromatic that has a lot of flavor, and since Christmas is close I can't resist in recommending this, is Hearth & Home Eggnog.

Here is my review of it:

Bob, thanks for the advise. You are right, slower is better. I smoked a bowl of Captain Black this weekend and went slow and easy. It was a very nice smoke and tasted great. The Captain is still one of my favorites.....

I like the taste of burleys and to me, they smell good while being smoked. The only problem I have with them is the room note after they have been put down for a while. To me, it smells of cigarettes.

Maybe I need to find a better blend?

I have the same problem with aromatics. I have yet to find one that tastes like it smells and I have tried many. My wife complains heavily when I smoke them inside. She says they smell like chemical laced tobacco. Being an ex cigarette smoke I am finding that I enjoy virginias more and more.
