No effect on sleep from me either though sometimes smoking dries my eyes out, in which case I often will go to sleep or close my eyes, but that doesn't count. That's just not having anything else to do. I smoke but I won't touch eye drops.

Never noticed any effect either way. Several years back I spoke with a doctor about sleep issues. I frequently get up to pee, bouts of insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, that weird thing when you think your awake talking to yourself/thinking about things in your head but you’re actually asleep, etc.

I told him it’s been that way since I was about 15. He told me I didn’t have any “issue”, that’s just my sleep pattern.

Actually, it’s not a stimulant in the same way most stimulants work. We had a guy who could better explain it, but in my best layman’s terms. It releases stored sugars into the blood. In a low dose quick fix cigarette sorta way, it is a traditional stimulant. But, with cigars and pipes, it’s a higher dose over a longer period, so it drains the sugars leaving one shakey and nauseous. And, a morsel of sugar like chocolate replenishes that , fixing the nausea, leaving one sleepy.
I’ve seen green faced first time cigar smokers fall asleep in the briary, barely able to regain consciousness.
So, it can be a stimulant that turns into a depressant in high doses…. more of a blood sugar thing.

Maybe someone else can remember the terms.

As I can understand nicotine affects blood sugar level. So, who are from you guys have diabetes like me (type 2) and how your blood glucose level looks like after you smoke? I'm asking that, because almost few weeks my blood sugar results is 30-50% more than usually. Is the pipe could be a reason?
And answering a genuine question, smoking pipe doesn't affect my sleep.

AHA! I Knew It!
I've always felt tobacco was a sleep aid but "studies" keep calling it a stimulant so I could only assume Nicotine had nothing to do with it.
Now I know that pipesmoking will make you tired from both Carbon Monoxide exposure (exposure to smoke will reduce your blood oxygen), and a sugar crash.

That is WAY out if my pay grade. I hope you are open with your doctor about smoking pipes. Diabetes is not really something to mess around with. I’m really sorry. I’m not anywhere near qualified to answer that for you.

That’s just my “understanding.” It is still a kind of stimulant, just not one where more means more stimulation. It definitely puts me to sleep, when I get enough.

Alcohol disturbs my sleep, and doesn't leave me feeling rested. Nicotine doesn't seem to effect me either way. I use a CPAP, and that sucker is a dream machine. Put it on, put in the ear plugs, and I'm off to REM sleep. Despite cardiac meds, which on occasion force me to wake up just to drain the system, I usually sleep through the night. In fact, I can sleep too long if left unattended. 12 hours is easy for me to do. The only thing that disturbs my sleep is back pain and our two labs, who simply can't go 8 hours without me.

PS: Did you know that Nicotine is a diuretic?
My wife uses a CPAP and loves it. I have done the study, and they wanted to try the CPAP on me, but my O2 wasn’t really an issue when I did the study. I tried it, but it just didn’t do anything for me.
Back pain, that I have experience with. Sciatica in specific. Meds never helped me with that at all. I just do a combo message and chiropractic therapies. But, since doing yoga I haven’t had issues. I am not like a regular yoga guy. I just do the stretches that help me keep my hips limber, especially after riding a tractor or driving all day. But, back pain is terrible. I hope you manage that well.

I'm another insomniac. My mind just keeps chugging, and - often - stressful or anxious thoughts and feelings disturb me. Sometimes I can fall asleep initially, but I'll wake up 2-3 hours later and not feel sleepy again for the rest of the night.

I absolutely do find that a pipe in the evening (normally the only time that I smoke) relaxes me and helps me feel sleepy. In fact, although this isn't the reason I started pipe smoking, this "nightcap" effect has become an increasingly prioritized reason that I pipe smoke.

As another member said, I haven't been sure whether it's something in the tobacco or just the relaxing ritual. But I expect that it is at least partly chemical.

I had never before heard this about N releasing locked blood sugars. That makes plenty of sense. That would make for a short term pick-me-up followed by a crash.

In any case, although I feel no discernable buzz or pleasure from pipe smoking, I do feel my facial muscles relaxing, and sometimes even a mild sense of well being.

I do sleep better after pipe smoking.

P.S. As for alcohol, my consistent experience is that it exaggerates my normal pattern of falling asleep well but then waking up in a couple hours. After a few drinks, I may feel very draggy and crash quickly. But I will invariably wake up two hours later insanely wired and uncomfortable and will not sleep again the rest of the night.

Right, raising your blood sugar obviously means you're going to be more alert while actively smoking, assuming you've got the sugar reserves.
Then the stimulation leads to a post pipe sugar crash.

Sounds logical to me. But, probably human body chemistry has more complexity to it than to be able to fully break it into a simple sentence. But, I know what you're saying, and I agree.

I use a CPAC also. Occasionally, I am too tired / just can't figure out how to use the gizmo. My new CPAC has a gizmo to tell me (actually my wife) how much sleep I get. This one works much better.

As far as sleep, I usually go to bed very early. This helps me. I only smoke one bowl a day. My wife knows if I have a bowl, since it affects my memory.

Elaborate, please!

<sniperoo> back pain is terrible. I hope you manage that well.
Not to digress too much here, but...yeah.

I've been managing it quite well for the past 30+ years, despite the condition worsening (now it's my upper, lower back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs...yeah. It's payback for years of carrying two cameras, and a heavy bag or three. And lot's of canoe portaging. I still work almost every day, and can make it through the occasional three-day shoot relatively unscathed. Being conscious of the warning signs of impending doom and being proactive about it is #1. Big NSAIDS. Got to try yoga. Everyone says that works.

Thanks for the sympathetic ear, Cosmic. Nobody knows what back pain is like until it happens to them! I'll see someone hunched over in the supermarket, doing the shuffle, using the cart as a walker, and I'll say "L3/L4?" and they'll nod.

Beautiful labs you’ve got there. The black one reminds me of mine, when she was about 7 years younger. I love Labs, especially black labs. Black labs matter… to me.

Nicotine is reported as being both a stimulate and a sedative, alternately, often in the same person. I often have to catch my one bowl of the day later in the evening, so I guess it is more sedative at that time of day for me. Generally, I sleep fairly well. The upper aspect I sometimes notice when it acts like coffee in making me talk or write more, and faster.

I take a drug called Seroquel that can knock out an elephant. I take 400 mgs and the stuff works great. It is not a Benzo like Ambien as that stuff is addictive as hell. Plus you can wake up with half your fridge in bed with you with no memory of even getting up.

I have been on the Seroquel for 18 years. It is an anti psychotic drug that can also be used for sleep. Since I am a psychotic it works for me.

If you really want to sleep get your doctor to write you a script for Thorazine, nothing like doing the Thorazine shuffle. Now if you can get your doctor to write you a script for Secanol then you would be sleeping like a log. Problem with it is that it is highly addictive and has been off the US market for 20 plus years. It is a Barbiturate and also a hypnotic. I still can't get my doctor to hook me up.

I have dealt with insomnia since I was a teenager and was self medicating for too many years to count. That is not healthy.

My late father taught pharmacy classes for many years. He had a big jar of Sodium Seconal out in the garage, along with a lot of the other items he needed for his toxicology classes. It was used in class to dose rats. I know full well why Seconal was taken off the market.
