I wasn't aware a person could sleep "too deep." I sleep well except when my heart meds get me up a couple of times each night. I smoke all day, every day and into the evening. The nicotine doesn't seem to bother me with respect to sleep patterns. When my head hits the pillow I mentally put myself on a beach in Maui and am asleep in a matter of minutes.

When my eldest was born I had to pretty much stop smoking pipes. At this time I would have maybe one or two bowls one evening a week. I found I would wake up about 2am really alert. It was hard enough getting any sleep (well still is) that I couldn’t risk waking up unnecessarily.

Now I have no issues, I smoke most days, a bowl of two, but very rarely in the evening anymore

I have never smoked all day.
I smoke on weekends only, or when I'm on vacation. And usually 2 bowls per day.
I'm not aware that smoking has had any effect on my sleep.

On the other hand, alcohol and going to bed soon after a large meal certainly disturbs my sleep

I have always had chronic insomnia. I could go weeks with just cat naps though college. I’ve had every sleep med, sleep study, and still…. Some worked with all sorts of side effects. My brain is just always spinning. Then, I found that if I smoke a heavy nicotine blend just before bed, I sleep like a baby, and I wake rested.
GH&co Dark Flake, twists, C&D Burley Flake #1, Rustica, Cotton Boll Twist, are all my last smoke of the day. Some nights, I can barely make it from my smoking chair to the bed. Give me a sledge hammer high nicotine before bed.

I'm relatively sensitive to nicotine, which is a stimulant. If I have a bowl too close to bedtime, I tend not to sleep very well.
Actually, it’s not a stimulant in the same way most stimulants work. We had a guy who could better explain it, but in my best layman’s terms. It releases stored sugars into the blood. In a low dose quick fix cigarette sorta way, it is a traditional stimulant. But, with cigars and pipes, it’s a higher dose over a longer period, so it drains the sugars leaving one shakey and nauseous. And, a morsel of sugar like chocolate replenishes that , fixing the nausea, leaving one sleepy.
I’ve seen green faced first time cigar smokers fall asleep in the briary, barely able to regain consciousness.
So, it can be a stimulant that turns into a depressant in high doses…. more of a blood sugar thing.

Maybe someone else can remember the terms.

Huh. Was it Dr Hannah?

However it works, if I smoke a pipe less than a few hours before trying to sleep, I don't sleep well.

That's my recollection, anyways. What does nicotine do for memory?

Early in the day, and Virginias and VaPers, I get a bit of stimulation also. But, many people find pipesmoking to be relaxing or reflective. I guess it just depends on the blend, how you smoke, and body chemistry.
I wasn’t saying that all pipe tobaccos in all pipes puts someone to sleep.

Before whoever it was, a memberin the medical field of some sort, had posted what I poorly paraphrases above, I had just thought the effects that I was having with strong blends was just pure nicotine poisoning. But, I’ve also seen guys fall asleep smoking cigars.
But, as I said it can act as a stimulant and a depressant, but more of a blood sugar manipulant thing.

I have NEVER got any "pick-me-up" or stimulant action from the pipe.............. 20 years ago on cigs....... yeah, a bit of a high in the AM.
To me, pipes just put me to sleep, be it Royal Yacht or Pegasus, or GLP's Odyssey.......... the pipe always relaxes me.
Now on sleeping?.......... I'm like the 'Coz,............ my brain is eternally spinning, and I have a real hard time shutting it down........ That's why I drink so much, and that's why I can't sleep because I have to get up to pee so much...........
I sometimes feel I'm in some sort of loop............ Sleep, wake, smoke, sleep, don't sleep, smoke, drink, sleep, wake, drink, pee, drink, eat, sleep, wake, scratch balls, back to sleep, wake, etc.......etc......

I wish alcohol helped me sleep. That would be easier for me. My wife thinks the sugar in alcohol affects me. I have no idea.

Don't do it............. alcohol is a drug, and you build a tolerance........... you need more and more, just to sleep.......... I need to back myself off of it, but it's not easy....... My brother smokes the weed-........... claims he sleeps well,........... I don't want to go down that rabbit hole.

My doc tells me that being a red head that pain meds and such affect me differently. Maybe alcohol too. Alcohol has always scared me. I’ve seen what it can do. And, I know that when I’ve broken bones, it’s just easier for me to deal with the pain than the pain meds.

I’ve set a one glass of wine with diner limit on myself. But even that, most of the time I’d just rather drink a juice. I’m weird I guess, ha ha.

Seems like several of you, I have always had trouble sleeping. When I was young it didn't matter :). My doc told me to take Benadryl and melatonin. It helped a lot. As I got older, I added a shot of Bourbon and now an evening pipe. I find the pipe very relaxing, don't know if it's the pipe or just because it forces me to sit calmly and enjoy.

I've never broken any bones......... Knock on wood..........
I am scared to death of pills......... I won't even taken vitamins.......... I'm weird THAT WAY..........
But a good stiff drink??.................. That's my weakness........... Not proud of it, a bit of a thorn in my side, but, ........... working on it......... puffy

Alcohol disturbs my sleep, and doesn't leave me feeling rested. Nicotine doesn't seem to effect me either way. I use a CPAP, and that sucker is a dream machine. Put it on, put in the ear plugs, and I'm off to REM sleep. Despite cardiac meds, which on occasion force me to wake up just to drain the system, I usually sleep through the night. In fact, I can sleep too long if left unattended. 12 hours is easy for me to do. The only thing that disturbs my sleep is back pain and our two labs, who simply can't go 8 hours without me.

PS: Did you know that Nicotine is a diuretic?
