Holy cow Hobie, I think he may be overcompensating for something though.... haha
Do you guys have a sizing chart on what constitutes Dunhill's sizes? I find myself often thinking "awesome its a group 3, now WTH does that mean?", when reading descriptions of pipes.
As to be on topic, I prefer medium-big pipes and clench on the right side of my mouth. I obviously can't clench pipes like my Autograph for very long but some medium sized pipes with a bend on them I can clench for quite a while. That is not to say that I don't own smaller pipes, my first pipe was a Bent Bob's, I just find I enjoy the relaxing long smoke of a bigger bowl size. I find they are usually longer, which takes the smoke away from my face, smoke a little cooler, kind of like a big ring gauge on a cigar, and are more comfortable in my hand when I do have to hold them.

"I find most pipe smokers are individualists, as am I, and we all sort of do our own thing. "
Amen to that, there is no right or wrong, just whats right or wrong for you.

I have difficulty clenching because I seem to have vampire teeth that eat through stems like a slice of bread, however gently I cradle the bit in my mouth.
When it comes to bowl size, I find I prefer a 3 for flakes and virginias, and a 4 or 5 for English blends or aromatics. A 2 just gets too small for my taste, and a 6 or ODA seems too cumbersome to hold. I originally assumed a bigger bowl was better because it meant a longer smoke, but I've since found that some tobaccos, like 1792 Flake, just don't work well in a large bowl at all, and don't benefit from a longer smoke for me.

I like larger pipes for a couple reasons… one being that I like a smoke to last a good while and the other is for the sliming effect!
:laughat: small pipes just look funny sticking out of the front of my big mug!

I'm most certainly a clencher, and really cant get comfortable unless my pipes are on the right side of my mouth. I write/paint alot, and need my hands free!

I find a smaller boul a much more enjoyable smoke all in all, and have also creativly lost most of my bigger pipes. Having said that, there are a few tobacco's (Old Dublin springs immediatly to mind) that are nothing less than harsh in a small pipe, and yet manage a far greater depth of flavour in the one or two big ones I've got left.

I'm with JC and Pipetrucker. Love a long smoke and a large pipe. Especially good with a large beard. I have one too, but not as outstanding. Pipetrucker definitely has the look and the pipe to go with it. My bucket list item has always been to learn to drive a 53'tandem trailer. Perhaps, in retirement, with available time, that too will be accomplished.

I too tend to lean towards smaller pipes, as a clencher, but I don't shy away from big bowls, as has already been noted, tobacco flavour profile changes with bowl size, and I like to get as many of the nuances as I can.
I also use softee-bits, my teeth are pointy and poorly aligned, and therefore, unless the bit is a big wide fish-tail, I can't comfortably hold it without biting down hard. P-Lips and bigger bits get heat-shrink.
I tend to clench more on the right side; which leads me to wonder - I'm a sinister lefty; how many of you left side clenchers are right handed?

Right side clencher here too! I do have 3 "mini's" (Big Ben Ranger, Chacom, Lloyd's) and the others are definitely medium sized pipes. I own one huge Ben Wade, it is so heavy, I only smoked it twice in 6 years I have had it, but that is definitely a full hour somke.

Realizing also that with the mini pipes I have to be extra careful because I am Latakiaphile and they tend to get warmer, faster and even more so, in smaller pipes.

I smoke a lot of flakes as well, so I still get an hour long smoke from a group 3 sized pipe.
