I looked for a way to contact the site administrator or anyone who would be able to answer this question, but the “Contact” link does not provide a way to contact anyone... so,
Why is this site not secure? When I log in, I get a warning that this site is not secure, and I’d like to know why that is, and what, if any, concerns I should have.

When you go to sponsor sites for commerce, you are covered by their secured sites. When you are on Forums, you're in public, like on the sidewalk or in a restaurant. So plan and speak accordingly. (Or that's my take. Correct me if I'm wrong. I ain't Mark Zuckerburg.)

Is the warning coming from the site or your security software? Some (most?) security systems rely upon site certifications or signatures (nope, not Zuckerburg here, either) to help substantiate safety. Some major sites are flagged by my Kaspersky software, yet I know they are (mostly) safe. Kaspersky has running "battles" with some browsers because each party wants to do things its own way. As others have stated, unless there is financial info involved, I don't worry too much.

Lets face it, this is an old website that does not show any desire to update things to today's standards for both security or features. I love the content here, but I wish it was a bit more user friendly.

This. This site doesn't need to be secure as there is no ecommerce (at least that I'm aware of). You would never want to hand out your credit card to a site that isn't SSL (HTTPS) secured.

The best suggestion I can give is that you should never reuse passwords from site to site. Make sure to create unique passwords for every site so the rest remain secure if one happens to be compromised...
If you can't remember them all, write them in a discreet little notebook and tuck them away somewhere safely.

Well, I'd modify that to those sites where security is a real concern- banks, Amazon, eBay, any merchant, etc.
Otherwise I'd have dozens of PW's outside of those, all different.
I believe the notice regards lack of certificate, which many sites that haven't a need of security do have.
