So I m far away from an advanced pipe smoker.

But what I learned for myself is that if while sipping i leave from time to time a bit of air with the sipping in and it intense and cools the smoke in my opinion.
I would say I do it a bit like wine tasting. Normally you smell wine and then sip it with a bit of air to intense the flavour.
Anybody else is doing it?
Or is it just in my head :D
Again still a lot to learn. ;)

I do not consciously try to dilute the smoke with additional air and I'm pretty sure I don't do it unconsciously either. Of course, there has to be some residual air in your mouth at all times. To experiment with your technique, I did try taking a tiny sip of smoke, holding it my mouth while drawing in additional air. It did cool my mouth but I couldn't really taste the smoke. Perhaps you should explain your technique in more detail.

Interesting coincidence this thread presents.

I’m still playing around finding my groove with my cadence and all. I smoke mainly with the breath method while clenching and can run hotter and faster than I should, sometimes with a price to pay.

I read earlier today somewhere in a thread here about doing the breath method of drawing, but having a gapped lip seal to allow a bit of air in with the tidal pull, as a manner of “cooling down” or lessening the issue of tongue bite.
I was actually smoking a straight Virginia that can get zippy on the tongue if I don’t pay attention, so I tried it out, and seems to work as described.

I get that a lot of the process is overthought, and all the internet info doesn’t help, but I’m old enough to try the input of others and keep what works and forget the rest. Heck, if I didn’t I’d still be overpacking my bowls and frying my tongue trying to keep things lit.

The “overthinking” and “un-necessary overcomplication” of processes I believe to be a side effect of the Information Age, but can be a positive and a negative to those that are prone to geeking out obsessively on new hobbies and interests. In the end it’s all about balance, and realizing the only person that has to enjoy what I do is me.

I think it stands to reason that in tasting wine or enjoying quality pipe tobacco, a lighter touch probably enhances the experience, letting your taste buds and sense of smell do the work and not putting them under siege with overdoing the amount and rapidity. Sipping is good.

Basicly I don't clench the pipe completely. For exampel with the air methode u close your mouth completly and use the pipe like a moutwash.
Here
I hold it in my hand and carefully sip from it while leaving a part of my mouth open so I also draw some air with it in my mouth. Like if you opening your mouth a bit and then draw air in but with a pipe. (Not in your lung though)

Thanks for the description. I understand what you mean. I tried your technique. Although I find it a bit awkward, it certainly makes for a slightly cooler and more dilute intake of smoke. The taste of the smoke was diminished and the gain in coolness was not enough to make up for the inconvenience of having to hold the pipe all the time. Certainly worth experimenting with further especially with bitey blends.

I have an old Yello-bowl "Air Control" pipe that does this for you - it's essentially a leaky stem that can be adjusted from closed-off to allowing a small amount of air into the smoke. Not sure how much difference it really makes but the thing works well with VA flakes and such.

I don't think you're wrong. Cadence and all that as well as what you speak of can lead to a better smoke. And your comments reminded me of this article from Greg P's a long time ago. Not exactly the same thing but certainly related to your thoughts perhaps.
