For anyone interested, here are some Singleton & Cole price lists from 1960. The most interesting thing is the whole host of other random things you could buy from them in 1960!

I was boggling at Hardcastles for a fiver and Dunhills for half that - until I noticed the Hardcastle prices were for a dozen and the Dunhills for each. A Group 3 Root Briar for 107/6 retail, £5 7s 6d - about half a week's wages for many in 1960.

Interesting that they list themselves as confectioners along with their other wares.

Old catalogs are often full of surprises. I grew up thinking of Thorens as makers of the finest turntables available, only to discover that they were making lighters and other smokers requisites in the 1930’s.

Notice it said the calabash pipes were "very scarce at present". Wonder why that was?
