To me she was just a nut job with a lot of psychological baggage. She may have had a good voice, but she wasted it
on tiresome screeds. The funny thing about "rebels" or "crusaders" is that when you complain about everything nobody listens to anything you have to say.
I guess there is a fine line between being guided by someone in the industry or being manipulated. It seemed that she did need the right guide.

I said that kind of harshly didn't I. First off, I regret that she has passed. People dying is a serious matter. Yes, once she reached the edge, she needed some to one pull her away from it.
No, but it made realize the razors edge people like her walk (musicians, artists, etc). They are thrust into the public eye, because of their talent, but don't have the mental stability to survive.

Madness has always had a certain appeal in artists. it reveals core passions and a certain kind of truth. I always feel like it is exploitative, but like a car accident, I sometimes gawk with the crowd. July Garland on TV in her later career, the poet Sylvia Plath throughout her career, Oscar Levant on the Jack Parr show.

Some performers carry it off better and can access their anger and sorrows and still keep their balance, like Edith Piaf or Leonard Cohen.

I saw the Saturday Night Live show when O'Connor tore up the photo of the Pope. Being from Chicago, where I almost grew up Catholic with my friends, without being Catholic, I knew what a mistake that was. Nonetheless, may she rest in peace.

I'm biting my e-tongue so hard it feels like I smoked 6 straight bowls of Borkum Riff.

Instead of touching on historical context regarding the faith community I was born of, here's one of my favorite songs with the dearly departed featuring another Irish character, Shane MacGowan.

I was going to reference her friendship with Shane McGowan. My understanding is that she helped save his life.

It's also my understanding Shane is currently in ICU.

Vibrant and talented. Such a shame she had to endure the trauma as a young person. Borderline personality disorder may have had something to do with her transition through religions in later life.

She sure called out the abuses within the Catholic Church years before it became widely known.
“She sure called out the abuses within the Catholic Church years before it became widely known.”

She was vilified more than the people committing the abuse and those covering it up.

Which, imho, is sadly typical.

God bless her soul wherever she is (I certainly have no idea). I wasn't a fan and the only thing I ever heard from her was the "Nothing Compares" song that was ubiquitous in the early 90s. I could never get beyond why a girl with such a pretty face would buzz off all her hair.

One of my friends became obsessed with the "Nothing Compares" song. I remember one night "riding around" (a smalltown thing that's probably not done anymore) and him playing that song ad nauseam. I also remember the SNL bit, though I didn't understand what it meant back then (I was a teen).

But all of it makes me think how odd a thing it is that someone gets famous for whatever reason, and suddenly he/she becomes an expert on politics, social causes, etc. and his/her opinion is sought out and (most of all shocking) taken seriously. A year before the Pope pic deal she might've been some unknown busker on a street corner with a guitar, ranting about this or that and viewed as a lunatic as crowds turn their eyes away and avoid contact. But put her on TV and she's a "voice of the people" all of a sudden.

The same thing happens every election cycle as film stars weigh in on "the issues" and talk politics. Most times their only real gifting was being born nice-looking. It just goes to show how goofy and ridiculous the world can be.

Talk about inner demons.

I have no idea how many mental afflictions she "officially" had, but it doesn't matter. She was completely non-functional because of them on a recurring basis, and merely crazy-acting the rest of the time.

What a hand to have been dealt...
That’s right, you don’t know, yet here you are running your ignorant mouth like you think you do.

Oh my. Are you family of the deceased? Or just a fanboy with a low flashpoint?

In an effort to preempt a lock let me try to drag this to a higher level of abstraction. The wise offer two philosophies on this point, and as is often the case their wisdom leads to diametrically opposed conclusions. The Romans famously believed in (or claimed to) the importance of De mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est. An equally revered authority once said “I pay him the tribute of speaking of him and feeling about him precisely as I did when he lived; the insult would be to smear his corpse with the honey excreted by my fear of death”. Both are valid viewpoints; I personally tend towards the latter.

You're funny.

Her mental health issues were many, layered, and well-documented. Hell, she described herself as a "suicidal baskest case".

But he did tell you to fuck entirely off.
That sounds very serious.
Apparently he’s from Nashville, so there’s a handicap there.
All in all, I can’t wait for the next outburst.

She was also abused, as a child. Some people can get over that, some people can’t. Seeing as she’s only just passed, be nice to hear a bit more respect for what made her famous, a woman with a beautiful voice.
