@aquadoc, http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/arango-briar-pipe-wipe
I will look at my can after supper and see if anything is listed on the can. It is really great stuff. The one I found in my closet has to be 20 years old or, likely, more. Everybody used it back in the old days, can't recall hearing any negatives about it.

@aquadoc, here is what is on the aerosol can:. A sophisticated blend containing beeswax, woolwax and carnuba wax, emulsified with mineral oil, lemon oil and mink oil.
The official name is Briar Pipe Wipe, made by Ruth Industries in St.Louis, distributed by Arango.

Cool. I cannot find it so I imagine it is no longer being made. It sounds similar to the butcher block mix I buy from home Depot... Well, OK, a little. No lemon or mink oil. But I have mink oil... Maybe I should make my own mixture.

I barely have enough for one handi wipe. The nest thing about it is that it got better the more you used it. You would go to a show and see guys shining up their high dollar pipes with handi wipes that were in shreds. Says right on the can "Don't dispose of it until it falls apart."

Did you look though that thread I posted a link to above? I didn't read it through completely, but it looks like someone might have the ratios.

I did look at those instructions but it leaves out many of the ingredients and that is a lot of lemon oil. I am going to search the patent records tomorrow. Maybe there will be something to start with or use as a guideline.

@didimauw, back when I was only a young geezer, the old geezers told me to never use silicone on briar. I have no idea if all Hoppes cloths have silicone, but some do.
I have no idea why I was told this. But I accepted it without reservation. Since about 1979, I have never used silicone on my pipes, and I have never had a problem.
YMMV.

I mixed 4 ounces of Howard's butcher block conditioner with 1 ounce lanolin, 1 ounce of melted mink oil, 1/4 of an ounce of lemon oil, and an additional ounce of beeswax. And it seems to be what I have been looking for. I might add another ounce of beeswax. But this mix produces a nice sheen and is more "stable", less greasy than Howard's original mixture, mineral oil, etc.

I'll preempt my question with "this might be silly and I am a noob" but what about olive oil? Was it dunhill or ashford that I read soaked their briar in olive oil for 15 days prior to a drying cycle? My thoughts go to olive oil because of how natural it's supposed to be...

I've read in several places that olive oil does go rancid eventually, as JP stated.
I understand that Duhnill did indeed soak their stummels in olive oil for a period of time. Don't know about ashford.

I have used olive oil on olive wood cooking tools and can say that it will turn. I think everything in the mix I have settled on is somewhat natural with the exception being mineral oil. But it is food grade mineral oil so it gets a pass too. I cannot recommend Howard's butcher block conditioner enough.

I do not know if I can capture the sheen tonight. This is with the butcher conditioner plus my minor additions.

I thought it was mineral oil.
I have been using the Red/pink version of the Dunhill polishing cloths for daily maintenance for years. I have one always at hand and one in my travel kit. 8O
