"We cannot ignore the fact that young people are recruited into smoking by colourful, eye-catching, cigarette displays," health minister Anne Milton said.
Yup thats it lady, you hit the nail on the head...All kids smoke because of the pretty colors

One of these days I will be spotted heading into the woods with a fishing pole, rifle and a bucket of tools and will never be heard from again...I get closer and closer every day.

I'm in, I made the decision that this was only a matter of time roughly this time last year.

I'm surprised that anyone could be surprised.
I'd have thought the fanciful notion that England is any sort of free nation would have long ago been dispelled form the mind of anyone with eyes to see and two brain cells to rub together.
Sadly, the US is well down the road to the same sad state.

@tslex: Very well said.
Regarding the whole "anti-tobacco" crusade, the idiots at the mid and lower levels of it actually believe it's about public health (which even if that were true, does not justify anything of course...the road to hell is paved with good intentions). But at the top, it does not really have anything to do with public health, imo. Anyone who thinks the "powers that be" actually want the general public to be physically and mentally healthy are living in a fantasy world...just the opposite is the case. Their top priority is population reduction...and they make mass profits off of "managing diseases" (as opposed to curing them...which is why they suppress alternative and natural treatments, and why no cure to things like cancer will ever come out of the establishment organizations).
So this begs the question, what is the real reason for the crusade against tobacco? 2 possible answers:
1) Long term planning...they know that eventually after another generation or two, they can make it completely illegal. Then they can make massive profits off of the black market trade just as they do with all other "illegal drugs" (yes Virginia, the "drug war" is a total scam and the trade is run at the top by the "power elite"...always has been).
2) Another possible reason is that nicotine is actually a very good anti-anxiety drug, and they definitely do not want people using it in place of the dangerous and deadly pharmaceuticals they push on the public.

Was going to give this its own post but I figured it fit quite well in this thread. Carlin was a genius.

Out of Respect for you, especially in a Forum, I do not argue Politics. I will say that I wonder where all of you were when Congress passed the F.T.C.A. (Family Tobacco Control Act)? Maybe you were active and maybe you were oblivious. It no longer matters because the Act passed and is in the implementation phase. All that you have seen regarding ciggarettes is the phase they are implementing now. Pipe tobacco is next in the Law. Make no mistake about it. According to Craig Tarler of Cornell and Diehl, he told me if the Act passes (which it did) the FDA will be in Control of Tobacco. It is. He also stated that it will take four years and pipe tobacco (as we know it) will not exist. There will be no aromatics allowed other than Menthol (who smokes menthol pipe tobacco?). Each blend and each ingredient will be chemically analyzed by a laboratory at the manufacturers expense. It will apply to Imported as well as Domestic blends. This is one of the reasons that Imports are not what they used to be because they know the new Law will apply to them as well. That's all I got to say. I can't count the number of letters I wrote to my Representatives opposing this new Law robbing us of our Freedom. I felt I was alone, or at least greatly outnumbered, by the Anti-Smokers. If you are wondering what I am talking about, you can read the Law that was passed here: http://pipesmokersintelligencer.org/call-to-action/tobacco-control-act
Where are prices for pipe tobacco going? Check this out. It is an excerpt from the Act.
“SEC. 919. User fees.
“(a) Establishment of quarterly fee.—Beginning on the date of enactment of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the Secretary shall in accordance with this section assess user fees on, and collect such fees from, each manufacturer and importer of tobacco products subject to this chapter. The fees shall be assessed and collected with respect to each quarter of each fiscal year, and the total amount assessed and collected for a fiscal year shall be the amount specified in subsection (b)(1) for such year, subject to subsection (c).
“(b) Assessment of user fee.—
“(1) Amount of assessment.—The total amount of user fees authorized to be assessed and collected under subsection (a) for a fiscal year is the following, as applicable to the fiscal year involved:
“(A) For fiscal year 2009, $85,000,000 (subject to subsection (e)).
“(B) For fiscal year 2010, $235,000,000.
“(C) For fiscal year 2011, $450,000,000.
“(D) For fiscal year 2012, $477,000,000.
“(E) For fiscal year 2013, $505,000,000.
“(F) For fiscal year 2014, $534,000,000.
“(G) For fiscal year 2015, $566,000,000.
“(H) For fiscal year 2016, $599,000,000.
“(I) For fiscal year 2017, $635,000,000.
“(J) For fiscal year 2018, $672,000,000.
“(K) For fiscal year 2019 and each subsequent fiscal year, $712,000,000.
George had it right and I am starting to feel it up my butt!

@captainbob: Yes, you're absolutely correct. It's just one more step in a never ending slide into complete tyranny. And it is the very "owners" that Carlin was referring to who are behind it. And it is those very "owners" who control the FDA and the entire Fed Govt. As John Rockefeller famously said, "Competition is a sin". He said that because the owners such as he do not believe in the free market. They believe in exercising complete control...and over the decades they have achieved just that. They own the treasury of the United States, and they use agencies like the FDA to destroy independent small business.
One of the main reasons why the avg person doesn't see what their really doing is because they don't think long term like the owners do. The elite families who sit above the govt and corporate structures follow long term, inter-generational plans. What we see around us did not happen over night...it's been in the works for not just decades, but even centuries...and longer. And it's about way more than just tobacco, that's for sure.

We have the same stupid ban. At least the real B&Ms still display the tobacco. I hate this ban with a passion.

Today I had the calamity of calamities, an empty pouch in a city I had only just arrived at. Now being a brainy sort of guy I headed for the local Tesco. For those who have never been to the U.K. Tesco is our biggest department store chain. Because of this recent law change all tobacco items are now hidden behind a shutter. I walked up to the tobacco counter and asked if they sold pipe tobacco. “Yes” the lady replied, “Here is a list of pipe tobacco we have in stock.” I looked through the small list and pointed to a name I had heard of and asked if it was a mild tobacco. “I’m sorry” she replied, “I am banned from recommending or showing you the tobacco. I can only sell it to you.” I now have a pouch full of tobacco that rips my lungs out with each puff, and needs relighting every two minutes.
I now think buying tobacco is going to become an internet only thing in the U.K.
