The little town I live 15 min away from (Darien GA) has their own shrimp fleet so......

When I was stationed in Fort Stewart, my first sergeant would get us into all kinds of crap.

One year, he volunteered our company to march in the annual Darien Shrimp Festival parade.

"Now men, this IS voluntary. You don't HAVE to participate. Anyone who does not wish to go, my orderly room floor could use a good stripping and waxing...."

I remember a good time, despite the dense haze of mosquitoes.

Nice haul, Brad!

Got a call this morning, my shrimp man came in, cold front pushed shrimp out the marsh. 21/25 3.50$ a pound, fresh caught last night!

The sad thing is that $3.50 a pound is more than what a seafood processor is paying shrimpers for fresh. The only way some shrimp boat captains can make a decent living is selling direct.

These 21/25 size (that's the number of shrimp per pound) are premium eating shrimp. You don't waste shrimp this size in gumbo, etouffee or jambalaya. I prefer the much smaller 71/90 ct. size for those dishes.

I had an older relative years ago that used to shrimp. He’d sell some direct there, mostly to restaurants, then pack up as many ice chests full of shrimp as he could fit in his van and drive up north to Shreveport and sell them, and stay with us a night. He could sell them for more than what he would’ve gotten back home. I was a kid, so I’m not sure exactly how big the price difference was, but it was obviously enough that it was worth the gas money and time to drive up. And that was before I-49, so it was a long drive.

The middle man always screws the worker, that’s why they are selling out of their home. In the fifties my Father would get 1.50 a lb for 15/20 , for shrimp cocktails in New York, Middle man was getting 4.50$; crabs .50 centch a dozen. I attended a bonfire in the fall with trappers a good friend had invited me. It was a little settlement and we had a lively talk. Their problem again was the middleman, their furs were getting premium price in Chicago but the buyers was robbing them. I am glad to say my friend and I gave them an idea that would change their lives, they got togheter and bought 2 refrigerated trucks, financed by a Exxon credit Union where we were members, they bypassed the buyer and drive to Chicago and with contacts established buyers and doubled their income. Feels good when something works well.
