To clarify- if you send an old zippo back to the company, they will replace it with a pipe insert for free?
Yep and usually send your original insert back with it.

This is a great section! I have to dig up my Zippo and will post. Historically, I never used my Zippo as I only used butane torches for cigars, never the stinky Zippo drenched in lighter fluid. I see there are now butane inserts for these. Is that what you guys use for pipes? Now that I’m smoking a pipe, I’d love to use my Zippo, but again, couldn’t imagine using one of the old lighter fluid kind to light a pipe. Please enlighten this newbie.
Here is my Zippo. My wife bought this at a high end antique store in NYC. Despite there being a million fake Vietnam era Zippos, this one is supposed to be genuine. I noticed they now have butane inserts for these, which I think I will try out. Don’t want to light anything with the lighter fluid mechanics of this one.

Do you have to send the case as well? I have a few that I have collected over the years and all but a couple have the regular insert. BUT I do not want to lose them... but it would be cool to get pipe inserts for them as that is what I use for pipe smoking.
Probably. There are a couple of different size specs in the cases. They'll send it back along with the original insert.
I called them and they said they typically tell you not to send in the insert because people send them full of fuel. If you do send in the insert they usually trash them and just give you a new one, but as long as you send it sans fuel and write a note saying you want your old insert back, they will comply.

I recently purchased this one to use while playing golf. Works well. I don't think there's any taste from the lighter fluid, I think it's the smell that makes you think you're tasting it. Letting it burn for a couple of seconds before bringing the flame to the tobacco pretty much eliminates the smell.
The last two I have. The brass one was a gift from a now deceased son in law, the Steelers was also a gift from one of my daughters. I have sent Zippo’s back several times, I send the whole lighter, they return with new insert, guaranteed for life! I change the inserts as the mood suits me.?
Clean and simple. I recently added a $15 Vector butane pipe insert to use, works great. 
This makes a real nice change from the usual also-ran patterns seen on a Zippo.
These are the only two I have, bought them used years ago. The one engraved Bogus '76 I got just because I though it was a funny thing to have engraved on a lighter. I have no idea what it stands for but when I researched the date stamping on the bottom, it dates to 1975. So in a way I guess it is a bogus '76 lighter. The other one I found in a second had shop long ago, and even though it was a pipe lighter with the correct insert, the top plate on the flame guard was missing. Zippo said I didn't have to send it in for the part as they would just mail me the part and as usual, it was free. What a great company, making a great product and doing business the right way!
I have several Zippos, but this one is my favorite. I'm a Coastie and my little brother is Army. He found this one while he was stationed in South Korea in '03 and gave it to me as a gift when he got back stateside. I've never seen another one like it. I added the pipe insert.
