I don't think it's a spray finish. When you look at it without really good lighting, it almost looks black or incredibly dark brown. The grain comes out when the lighting is just right.

Awesome pipes gents. I've been wanting a Peterson Spigot for quite some time but just can't spend the cash right now.

@Vespertillio: interesting finish, it's dark and nice and when under a good light it reveals the grain....do you happen to know which year is the pipe ?

I'm still not sure what date it is. I've tried using the symbol references online to determine a year but I haven't found a match yet. Here's a couple closer shots of the symbols. Perhaps one of the seasoned experts here knows. I would definitely like to know as well.

six, that is a great looking collection of spigots, I do believe you now have a spigot fetish going on, does your wife know? lol
I love the look of spigots but have never owned one, I am a lazy bastard and the thought of having to keep all that silver clean is too much for me to bear. I do have one pipe left( used to have 5) with a silver band and it pisses me off when it gets tarnished. I do use a magic eraser to keep it somewhat shiny, but silver polish is really what it needs.
castellarius, I do love that Gold spigot, that must be easy to keep clean as Gold doesn't tarnish, maybe that is what I need.

Thanks Harris - love my spigots! I will say, polishing them isn't a problem for me. I have a polishing cloth with my pipe cleaners, etc and when I do a thorough alcohol cleaning, I will do a quick wipe with the cloth and they're done.
No bother at all.

Great pipes guys.
Help me out here - I understand vaguely that what distinguishes a spigot from an army mount is that a spigot has silver on the shank, is this correct? Or does it require silver on the shank and the end of the stem?

I think you are correct Peck, but for me personally, I kinda lump in spigots with army or military mounts.
@astrange1
Those are beauties!

Yes, Spigots come frome the habit of soldier to put the body of a bullet on the shank when it got broken or to make it last longer.
Molitary mounts, without silver on the shank, are an evolution of the spigots, pipe makers providing pipes ready made easy to unmount even when hot and at high speed, without fear of breaking them. Just in case action suddenly begins when you are puffing...
As for cleaning silver, at least here in Italy, they sell a cloth containing the cleaning stuff for silver (it smells terrible !). Mom always have one at home and sometimes it disappear eheheh. A couple of passes with that cloth and they are all shining. I would say 30 seconds a pipe :)
@astrange: wonderful pipes, I really like the green spray....think it's gonna be my Christmas present if I can find the right shape...(pretty rare they are...)

Six, a silver polishing cloth sounds like it would be a breeze keeping them clean. How much weight does all that silver add, are they a lot heavier than pipes without it?

It really is a piece of cake to run the cloth over them - and they look like new once done.
The weight may be an issue for a clencher. My latest Peterson Spigot (far left in the top photo) weighs 1.7 oz and is the lightest of my spigots (but it is also 6.5 inches long as well). I am sure if a pipe were an inch shorter, could get the weight down even more.

There is a pretty nice Ferndown Silver Spigot (1985) on Ebay now, with a pretty low BIN...
I can weigh my two stems on the Upshall (one silver clad, the other not). But, my bet is there is about a 5-10 gram difference, probably more like 5.
